HomeMy WebLinkAbout1955-09-21-TCC-min.pdf 3 LEXINGTON CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE Season of 1955-56 Minutes of First Meeting, Wednesday, September 21, 1955 The first meeting of the Lexington Celebrations Com- mittee was held in the Selectmen's Room at the Town Office Building, Wednesday, September 21, 1955 The meeting was called for 7 30 p.m but did not get under way until about 8 o'clock There were present Mrs. Edith B. Cheever (Mrs Wilbur E ) Mr Murray Dearborn Mrs Dorothea Dodge (Mrs Arthur C ) Mr George E Foster Mr Bertram P Gustin Mr Lewis Kennedy Mr Raymond E Lewis Mr Joseph Rooney Mr Eugene A Sawyer The following members named by the Selectmen to serve on the Committee were not present Col Connell T Albertine Mr Joseph Belcher Mr Howard Butler Mr Albert G Frothingham Mr Bentley S. Hutchins Mrs Edna F Litchfield (Mrs Harry W ) Col Anthony Rock Two men originally named by the Selectmen were unable to serve and had declined the appointment, namely Mr Maurice Gagne Mr Daniel P O'Connor Mr George E Foster called the meeting together PURPOSE at the request of the Selectmen and explained that the purpose of it was for the Committee to organize He declined the nomination to act as Chairman He explained that we are appointed for one year only and that our term expires July 1, 1956 and our duties are to arrange for celebrations by the Town of certain holidays, chiefly United Nations Day and Patriots Day but also Veterans' Day and Memorial Day It is not a permanent Committee but probably a similar one will be appointed each year Uponmotion duly made and seconded, Mr Raymond CHAIRMAN E Lewis was elected Chairman and accepted the election. �- There was some discussion about who would serve 4 as Secretary. Mr Lewis explained that the Secretary SECRETARY would have a great deal of work to do, writing and telephoning and that the Secretary should be some one DISCUSSION who would be readily available at all times After some discussion it was decided possibly it would be best to have two Secretaries - one a Recording Secre- tary and one a Corresponding Secretary but to lay over to the next meeting the final decision Upon motion duly made and seconded, Mr Lewis Kennedy was elected Recording Secretary for the current meeting It was the sense of the meeting that our Com- POLICY mittee had been appointed by the Selectmen to call upon whatever persons or organizations it chose for assistance and participation and that the members of our Committee were not chosen because they or any of them happened to belong to any particular groups or organizations within the Town It was the sense of the meeting that the Com- mittee would not resort to the Selectmen nor appeal to them, except for money to take care of the expenses of the Committee It was the sense of the meeting that the cele- brations should be financed, as far as possible, with- out recourse to Town funds and that money should be raised privately and publicly in ways to be determined upon If it should prove necessary to appeal to the Town for funds, Mr Foster pointed out that a request for our appropriation must be in the hands of the Selectmen by December in order that an article might appear in the Warrant for Town Meeting Upon motion duly made and seconded it was VOTED To invite one of the Selectmen, preferably the Chairman, to be present at the next meeting of the Committee and that the Recording Secretary pro tem be directed to extend this invitation It was VOTED That the next meeting of the Committee be held on Wednesday, September twenty-eighth at 8 p.m sharp in. the Selectmen' s Room at the Town Office Building Plans were then discussed for the celebration of UNITED United Nations Day which will be October 21i.. Mrs NATIONS Cheever submitted some folders which she had obtained DAY from the Library Various suggestions were made, to be further developed at our next meeting, such as 5 1) Invite the clergymen of the Town to mention or preach about United Nations on October 23 2) Contact the art teachers in the schools to have the school children prepare posters 3) Have the pupils in the schools submit essays on United Nations and have one from each of the three classes of schools; i e , Elementary, Junior High, and High School printed in the Lexington Minute-man 4) Obtain a speaker on the United Nations to explain how it functions, using the Junior High School Auditorium 5) Ask the Selectmen to have the flags displayed on United Nations Day 6) Plant a tree - perhaps back of the Minute Men Monument and dedicated to Julius Seltzer It was decided to invite Mrs. Pigford as repre- sentative of the League of Women Voters and Miss McIntyre, representing the schools to be present at our next meet- ing There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9 30 p.m Lewis Kennedy Recording Secretary, pro tem l .
