mittee was held in the Selectmen's Room at the Town Office
Building, Wednesday, September 21, 1955 The meeting was

on the Committee were not present

Two men originally named by the Selectmen were unable
to serve and had declined the appointment, namely
Mr Maurice Gagne
Mr Daniel P O'Connor
Mr George E Foster called the meeting together PURPOSE
at the request of the Selectmen and explained that the
purpose of it was for the Committee to organize He
declined the nomination to act as Chairman He explained
that we are appointed for one year only and that our term
expires July 1, 1956 and our duties are to arrange for
celebrations by the Town of certain holidays, chiefly
United Nations Day and Patriots Day but also Veterans' Day
and Memorial Day It is not a permanent Committee but
probably a similar one will be appointed each year
Uponmotion duly made and seconded, Mr Raymond CHAIRMAN
E Lewis was elected Chairman and accepted the election.
- There was some discussion about who would serve
4
as Secretary. Mr Lewis explained that the Secretary
SECRETARY would have a great deal of work to do, writing and
telephoning and that the Secretary should be some one
DISCUSSION who would be readily available at all times After
some discussion it was decided possibly it would be
best to have two Secretaries - one a Recording Secre-
tary and one a Corresponding Secretary but to lay over
to the next meeting the final decision Upon motion
duly made and seconded, Mr Lewis Kennedy was elected
Recording Secretary for the current meeting
It was the sense of the meeting that our Com-
POLICY mittee had been appointed by the Selectmen to call
upon whatever persons or organizations it chose for
assistance and participation and that the members of
our Committee were not chosen because they or any of
them happened to belong to any particular groups or
organizations within the Town
It was the sense of the meeting that the Com-
mittee would not resort to the Selectmen nor appeal
to them, except for money to take care of the expenses
of the Committee
It was the sense of the meeting that the cele-
brations should be financed, as far as possible, with-
out recourse to Town funds and that money should be
raised privately and publicly in ways to be determined
upon
If it should prove necessary to appeal to the
Town for funds, Mr Foster pointed out that a request
for our appropriation must be in the hands of the
Selectmen by December in order that an article might
appear in the Warrant for Town Meeting
Upon motion duly made and seconded it was
VOTED To invite one of the Selectmen, preferably the
Chairman, to be present at the next meeting of
the Committee and that the Recording Secretary
pro tem be directed to extend this invitation
It was
VOTED That the next meeting of the Committee be held
on Wednesday, September twenty-eighth at 8 p.m
sharp in. the Selectmen' s Room at the Town
Office Building
Plans were then discussed for the celebration of
UNITED United Nations Day which will be October 21i.. Mrs
NATIONS Cheever submitted some folders which she had obtained
DAY from the Library Various suggestions were made, to be
further developed at our next meeting, such as
5
1) Invite the clergymen of the Town to mention or preach
about United Nations on October 23
2) Contact the art teachers in the schools to have the
school children prepare posters
3) Have the pupils in the schools submit essays on
United Nations and have one from each of the three
classes of schools; i e , Elementary, Junior High, and
High School printed in the Lexington Minute-man
4) Obtain a speaker on the United Nations to explain how
it functions, using the Junior High School Auditorium
5) Ask the Selectmen to have the flags displayed on
United Nations Day
6) Plant a tree - perhaps back of the Minute Men Monument
and dedicated to Julius Seltzer
It was decided to invite Mrs. Pigford as repre-
sentative of the League of Women Voters and Miss McIntyre,
representing the schools to be present at our next meet-
ing
