HomeMy WebLinkAbout1973-09-26-LBC-min.pdf Minutes - September 26, 1973 The meeting was called to order at 7 40 P.M by the Vice Chairman Steve Politi Members present were4Fred James, Dick Michelson, Ray Barnes,. Alan Adams, Miriam Butts and Frank Masten The minutes were accepted Steve announced that he had completed the list for the Bicentennial speakers bureau. The list includes Warren Butters, Miriam Butts, Lincoln Cole, Tony Mancini, Dick Michelson, King Howard, and Steve Politi Steve suggested that organizations be contacted about the speakers bureau. Alan felt that there should be some coordination about facts presented in the speeches Also the bureau probably should not be in effect until after the March Town Meeting The motion was made and seconded that there be a coordination of the subject matter of the speakers for the speakers bureau Miriam reported that she had met with Ann Scigliano who was very willing to provide space for Bicentennial articles The articles will be low key, emphasize citizen participation Ray Barnes and Walter O'Connell joined the meeting at this time Prof Lavan had a new group of students as observers of the meeting also The next order of business was preparation for tomorrow nights Joint Services meeting at Hanscom Field, and for the meeting with the Board of Selectmen and Appro- priations Committee on Monday night Linc Cole and Ray Barnes will attend the meeting at Hanscom Field Dtck Michelson read the proposed events and the committee discussed the timing and selection or deletion of the events as previously agreed upon It was e emphasized that LBC would not be expected to run the events but that the events would be coordinated under the plans of LBC The discussion started with the night of April 18, 1975 with the arrival of Paul Revere at midnight - this event to be done in cooperation with the Historical Society, the National Lancers, and the Minutemen April 19 would start with the 5 30 A.M. dawn re-enactment on the Green Ray is still apprehensive about this event although the re-enactment went off 100% better in 1973 than it had in 1972 Mr O'Connell said that the control plan can be strengthened by pulling the crowd back- perhaps to the lawns on the other side of the streets This would give more viewers a more distant view Press should be allowed only to film the 4 events not to take over for interviews etc after the event is finished Dick said that Channettwo would be interested in live telecast The sound system could be obtained from the air-force The early morning exercises would follow the re- enactment; followed then by the Centennial Legion parade Ray said that the numbers for this parade had dropped from 3,000 to 1,500 when he had talked to the Legion last Jim Nichols of the Legion was a little upset by the 9 o'clock start Ray will write a letter to the Legion asking for definite answers and understanding concerning the parade - 2 - Usually there is a one o'clock arrival of Paul Revere Discussion of this showed a division of opinion as to whether it was necessary to schedule two arrivals for the celebration No decision was reached At 1 30 P.M. VIP luncheons At Cary Hall Space for 200 should be provided and the caterer lined up now At 2 00 P.M. the afternoon parade using the new parade route There should be 90 to 100 units with floats A reception would follow the parade On April 20, Sunday there would be religious services and a re-dedication to which the President will be invited Mr O'Connell re-iterated that the events scheduled should have great significance - should be the focal point He also suggested that the dedication could be held at the National Historic Park and that the religious service could take place there also Miriam said that the Masterwork Chorale could be held on Sunday also - they can contribute one free concert to the Town of Lexington and several scheduled throughout the year Sunday scheduling is still vague Monday April 21 will hold the traditional Patriots Day ceremonies the Youth Parade, the traditional road race sponsored by the Lions Club at 10 00 A.M. Sporting events and/or band concert in the afternoon Steve asked for more clarification of what the Appropriations Committee will be wanting to hear from LBC Mr O'Connell said that it should be a time to update the A P C - they will have questions concerning the new director, they want more details There should be no important misunderstandings when the money starts being allocated The two scheduled mock-town meetings are to be held on October 4 and November 15 The November 15 one is for the Bicentennial LBC went into executive session at 9 30 and adjourned at 10 00 P.M.
