HomeMy WebLinkAbout1973-06-27-LBC-min.pdf /_ lLEXINGTON BICENTENNIAL a^ !ITTEE - Minutes - June 27, 1973 The meeting was called to order at 7 40 p.m in G-15 of the Town Office Building Present were Steve Politi who chaired the meeting, Roland Greeley, Alan Adams, Dick Michelson and Becky Nussdorfer Mr Robert Camp who has formerly expressed in assisting the LBC presented his plan for organizing and analizing the work of the committed He exhibited his chart which showed three areas of concentration -a proposed operational plan. Data Base- a systems approach, and Management Control system - showing goals and Master Plan He explained that he would catalogue areas of interest based on what has been done up to now The catagories of interest would be decided by LRC The committee felt that as long as Mr Camp has the time and the ability to do such a thorough job on the committee's behalf, LBC would welcome the assistance The data and the results of the cataloguing of the data would be of enourmous help in any presentation to the Town, for instance, Mr Camp will start to work on the program Two copies of the minutes will be sent to him for use in this work Dick described the progress of the Chamber of Commerce in underwriting and designing the Bicentennial coin The coin has been changed to show the art work to best advantage The Chamber has voted to underwrite the initial costs of tooling for the coin They expect to be able to meet other expenses by pre-sales of the coin. TBC voted to endorse the go-ahead on the coin subject to the Selectmen's approval Dick said that the only stipulation the Chamber had was that the profit of the coin sold at the visitors center would go to the Chamber to offset the costs Otherw's: the profits would go to the Town a y<vup Ladled "Waite. up America outlined she history of the group and what they were doing He hopelthat LBC would adopt the theme "Wake Up America" He had a record made by a well known singing group called the Lewis and Clark Expedition - which had caught on with the young people He feels that an appeal to the youth is important in the celebration of our history He also had a logo designed in red white and blue which the "Wake Up America" group is using TMC explained to Mr Spurr that we had already decided upon our theme "Pride in our Past, Faith in our Future The members of LBC thanked him for his time and wished him luc. Alan Adams expressed his feelings about the lack of decisions and the lack of t_-e for the work necessary for the committee A discussion followed and the concensus was that we talk to King at the earliest possible time If King returns before our next meeting we will arrange a meeting with him h - 2 - Steve read the note: of Miriam's report She has contacted several persons in the 128 business community and two Lexington Banks and has scheduled a meeting on July 5 in the library with these people and any member of the committee who can make it She is offering suggestions for sponsorships and hopes to have these firms make some commitments before Oct 1 , 1973 Dick brought a letter from Lexington,Kentucky to the attention of the committee Becky will answer it and express the interest of LBC in keeping in touch with that Town in regard to the celebration Roly reported on the meeting of the Planning Board on June 25 Eric Clarke is now the chairman They asked their staff to work with Roly to set up pairs of alternatives- accommodations, minimal vs all out Ken Briggs is the new director Doug WS:;tney of the planning Board had made several fine reports using overlays and demonstrating the points for parking that are available now and possible sites - showed 17 control points Roly also impressed the committee with the idea of issuance of tickets as a means of controlling the number of automobiles to come into Lexington on the weekend of April 19th 1975 These tickets do not necessarily have to be sold - but would be given on a first come first served basis A letter from Amherst Mass offering uniforms of the colonial era was referred to the Historical Society Dick said that Ed Jones of the audio firm will be meeting with Lexington Selectmen and members of the Chamber of Commerce on Monday Also members of the Historical Society may be there It las noted that any repo rts_o€_ne_e-tings—pertinent—to -our—comm-ittee—be-reviewed- -- and and the basis results of such meetings be recorded in the minutes Therefore, the following is a quick review of the meeting held in Room G-15 on Tuesday afternoon June 26 LBC was called at the last minute by Mr O'Connell Present were Richard Barringer, Director of the State Bicentennial, Mary Herbert and Carol Ludden of the State Commission, Wayne Torkington who will be liaison between the towns and the state with particular emphasis on logistical problems, Paul Flynn and John Finigan from Concord, Jr Dillon in charge of tourism for the State, Jen Kuhniham of the Concord Planning Board, Mr Simpson and Mr Lane in connection with state transportation and fringe parking, and Greeley, Michelson, Butts and Nussdorfer from LBC Dise•is:d on was thorough, with Mr O'Connell leading off with his chart representing the structu'e of bicentennial planning from the State through the towns and agencies 3 I Mr O'Connell indicated that the Towns were not getting the answers from the State State representatives described their progress and new organization Mr Torkington will spend 500-75% of his time in assistance to Lexington and Concord Plans for information in the form of brochures and information centers hope to be firmed up by Fall '73 Torkington plans to proceed immediately The next meeting of LBC will be on Thursday July 12 at 7' 30 p.m in Room G-15 Respectfully Submitted, /I Beck Nus dorfer, Secretary '
