Minutes - April 12, 1973
Due to the fact that Town Meeting was still in session, the meeting of the LBC was
held early at 7 00 P.M in Room 111 of the Town Office Building Dick Michelson chaired
the meeting in the absence of King Howard Other members present were Fred James, Miriam
Butts, Pat Wheatley and Becky Nussdorfer
The main item on the agenda was a meeting with representatives of the New England
Regional Opera Co consisting of Doris Pullen, Don MacFeeley, Dick Marshall and
Louise Darling Doris introduced the other members of her group She said that NERO is
a non-profit organization with no capital They work with the communities to decide on
site and facilities and hoped that a local committee could be formed for fund raising
Mr Marshall, who is the producer wondered about lighting facilities at Cary Hall or
whether there could be air conditioning He said it would take at least $10,000 to mount
the production plus $3,000 for each performance $15,000 should be raised before opening
night
Dick Michelson thought that a hatch shell type of structure with a tent added would be
a good town bicentennial project Mrs Darling thought that the best bet would be for
industry to raise the money Mr Marshall said that his experience showed that for
successful fund raising the whole town should be behind the project Dick Michelson told
the group that King Howard had been encouraged by his first contacts with industry in this
regard Doris said that other groups are interested in cooperating - she mentioned that
the Girl Scouts contributed time and interest at the performance of "They Nobly Dar'd"
in 1963
