HomeMy WebLinkAbout1973-03-29-LBC-min.pdf LEXINGTON BICENTENNIAL COMMrEE Minutes - March 29, 1973 In the absence of King Howard, Dick Michelson called the meeting to order at 7 40 p.m Members present were Fred James, Roland Greeley, Miriam Butts, Alan Adams, Dick Barnes, Linc Cole, Tony Mancini and Becky Nussdorfer The minutes were approved with the suggestion that the final draft of the resolution for the Town Meeting be included with today's minutes The resolution is so included First order of business was the report from the Arts and Culture Chairman, Miriam Butts She had personally contacted the several arts groups in town including the Cary Lecture Committee, Arts and Crafts, Masterworks Chorale, the High School music and arts departments Garden Club, and the Scottish Rites facilities Her_idea for the celebration was that each group would try to produce or provide one or two special treasures and that there would be a booklet describing these treasures and where they would be found She hoped that such projects would be of an on-going nature She will expect a letter from each group out-lining their ideas and a schedule of dates assigned The committee expressed the need for a calendar to enable LBC to ascertain the dates and clarify scheduling of events Miriam felt that perhaps she had not included ethnic groups in her study so far Discus- sion followed with several ideas as to how to include such groups Miriam feels that 'ost groups want to be assigned dates and suggested ideas Miriam also was very enthusiastic about the Navy Steel Band which might be available for a performance during the bicentennial She will follow up on information about this group LBC accepted her report with great appreciation and praise It is enclosed with these minutes There was some discussion of the role of the scientific community in the bicentennial Linc Cole said he would be in touch with Tom Philips, president of Raytheon in this regard April 25 was set aside for the meeting on the Tax free foundation Dick Michelson proposed that LBC request a new member be appointed to LBC specificallu from the Appropriations Committee Linc said that this was not possible but that a liaison person could be assigned Linc will formalize this and ask that such a person attend the next meeting of LBC The meeting was adjourned at 9 p.m Respectfully submitted, Becky Nussdorfer NOTE For the Record - The March 28th Town Meeting approved the resolution and voted to .ppropriate $20,000 toward expense $7. the celebration t ( RE' .;LUTION FOR 'H TOWN kE TING PARCH 1973 t.vhereas the Town of Lexington has a resp^nsibility to our forefathers who shed their blood in the cause of ffeedom And Whereas the Town of Lexington is a national historic site And whereas the peorle of our Country nave a tacit invitation to visit us by virtue of our history And Whereas appropriate action has been taken by the Board of Selectmen in September of 1971 in a-,pointing a Bicentennial Commthttee And whereas the Bicentennial Committee has taken the position that the Bicentennial events of 1975 shall be for ,he people of Lexington 4ith proper provisions made to share the fruits of our work and our heritage with as many visitors as we can effectively accommodate And Whereas the 1972 Annual Town Meeting unanimously approved part one of a three part budget request Be it resolved that the 1973 Annual Town Meeting enco. rages the Lexington Bicentennial Committee to continue the planning and execution of Bicentennial activities which reflect the contemporary spirit and interest of the townspeople ^n ` � th 3I t1 f r =� 1 ` A NEW ENGLAND CHRONICLE: A BICENTENNIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC ESSAY ON SEVENTEENTH AND EIGHTEENTH CENTURY ARCHITECTURE IN AND NEAR LEXINGTON MEETING HOUSE AND CHURCH: EXAMPLES FROM LEXINGTON AND ITS RELATION TO TWO OTHER COLONIAL MEETING HOUSES IN NEW ENGLAND FRAMING AND JOINTING A COLONIAL NEW ENGLAND WOOD DWELLING HOUSE: EXAMPLES OF LEXINGTON SEVIEITEENTH AND EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY HOUSES AND THEIR RELATION TO OTHER NEW ENGLAND FRAMED HOUSES OF THE SAME PERIOD. IT IS HOPED CARY LIBRARY WILL CONSIDER WHAT IT WISHES TO DISPLAY AND HOW IT WISHES TO HAVE THIS OBJECT LISTED IN A PROJECTED WALKING TOUR OF LEXINGTON.. THEY ARE ALL INVESTED, VERY FEW HAD CONCRETE PLANS. THEY ALL WANT SUGGESTIONS. I MADE FEW. THE MASTERWORK CHORUS SPECIFICALLY WISHES TO PRESENT AN EVENING CONCERT ENTITLES: A NEW ENGLAND CHRONICAL. KEN GARLAND, THE PRESIDENT OF THIS GROUP`TWISHES °-TO DETERMINEA-SPECIFIC DATE. ARRANGEMENTS WILL BE MADE BY THEIR OWN GROUP FOR THIS EVENT. THEY ARE INTERESTED IN HAVING THEIR GROUNDS USED. THEY ARE SPECIFICALLY WILLING TO BUILD AN OUTDOOR PLATFORM FOR A CONCERT. I ACCEPTED. THIS IS NOT ON PAPER. THEY WOULD LIKE TO CONSIDER EXHIBIT OF REVOLUTIONALRY AND OTHER COSTUMES, OF THE CIVIL WAR YEARS. I THOUGHT THAT WAS SUPER. THEY HOPE TO COMMMISION A LARGE ART WORK FOR THEIR GROUNDS RELATING TO LEXINGTON HISTORY, DO WE HAVE ANY IDFZS. I HAD NONE BUT SUGGESTED THEY FORGET AN REVOLUTIONALEY BATTLE SCENE. TEL CARY LIBRARY WILL ASSIST AND PRESENT A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBIT RELATING TO LEXINGTON'S ARCHITECTURE. THE EXHIBIT WILL BE ONE OF THREE PHOTOGRPAHIC EXHIBITS. THE OUTAINE FOR ONE EXHIBIT IS ENCLOSED. CARY WAS ASKED BY NE TO DETERMINE ONE SPECIFIC OBJECT WHICH MIGHT BE SET ON DISPLAY AS ONE OF CARY'S TRVSSI1BES. YOU WILL BE PLEASED TO KNOW THAT IT WILL NOT BE THE GOLD STATUE BY RODIN IN TEE ATTIC, THEY WILL SINGLE OUT AN OBJECT AND KEEP IT ON DISPLAY. THE CARY LECTURE COMM. IS DELIGHTED TO DO SOMETHING ART OR CULTURE RELATED. THEY ARE AWAITING REAPPOINTMENT. THE SENIOR HIGH-SCHOOL THROUGH-MR.- CIANO WILL HAVE A REAL OUTLINE OF THEIR ACTIVITIES BY AF$IL`OR-MAY: THEY ARE WILLING TO COME TO ANY MEETINGS. MR. C. WOULD LIKE A K THROUGH 12 EXHIBIT IN ONE PLACE IN LEX. THIS CERTAINLY SHOULD BE POSSIBLE. FOR THIS AND OTHER'EASONS I WOULD LIKE TO WORK OUT A BICENTENNIAL TOUR OF LEXINGTON'S TREASURES: A WALING TOUR IN A BOOKET WOULD BE LISTED OUTSTANDING SINGLE OBJECTS ON DISPLAY IN LEXINGTON INSTITUTIONS OR OUTDOOR AREAS THAT REPRESENT SPECIAL PERSONAL AND EXHIBITAL VALUE TO THE TOWN.
