LEXINGTON BICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE
Minutes - February 14, 1973
The meeting was called to order in Room G-15 of the Town Office Building at 7 30 p.m
Present were King Howard, Alan Adams, Steve Politi, Dick Michelson, Tony Mancini, Linc Cole
Miriam Butts, Becky Nussdorfer and Pat Wheatley Mike Briana attended as an interested
citizen to get a feel for what LBC was doing and thinking
King asked if there were corrections to the last minutes The question of whether
Mr Campana had attended the last meeting as an individual or as a representative of the
K of C was discussed It was decided to revise the minutes to indicate that Mr Campana
was here as an individual
Attention was brought to a letter dated December 13, 1972 received from Bob Hilton,
director of Cary Library which requested a change in the LBC minutes which he felt
would correctly describe the situation involving the use of the Library for historical
records
The committee voted to change the words in the minutes of November 29, 1972 from
"seems to close" toldiscussed"
In further discussion of Permanent memorial ideas a motion was suggested that the
PM committee in its report to the Town Meeting request an extension of one year before
its final report This motion had to be held until a quorum is present
A copy of the "Bicentennial Newsletter" published by Bicentennial Resources, Inc
of Cambridge, Mass was shown to the committee and the question of whether to subscribe
was discussed Some of the members felt that we already had enough news information,
that the national and state publications were ample Since there was no great enthusiasum
for this pub-li ation, i-t-was decided-not-to-subscribe he uationalfy-published j
"Bicentennial Newsletter" of the ARBC was favorably criticized A recent issue was
particularly praised However a paragraph describing bicentennial plans on page one
indicated dates from "July 1975-1976" LBC felt a letter should go to the editors
concerning this point and emphasizing the significance of the earlier dates in 1975
The selection of a theme for Lexington's celebration of the Bicentennial continues
to be unresolved Mr Harris again met with the committee to strongly urge "0 Beautiful
for Patriot Dream" He read his letter previously sent to the committee to emphasize
his reasoning The phrase is used in the Masons brochure Other theme suggestions
were heard Pat Wheatley spoke for "Let Freedom Ring" pointing out that the Belfry
will be used on the stationery Later in the meeting the committee voted by ballot
on the following theme's
-2_ (-
So Proudly We Hail
Oh Beautiful for Patriot Dream
Let Freedom Ring
Let it Begin Here
A glorious Past, A Glorious Future
Pride in our Past, Faith in our Future
No decision could be determined It was also decided that the full committee should help
decide this point Therefore a post card with the five suggestions with the highest
number of votes will be sent to the voting members to be returned in time for an executive
meeting on the morning of February 24, 1973, in G-15 of the Town Office Building
King reported that the letters had been sent to Mr Finigan and to Roly Robbins
The military unit information had been turned over to Ray Barnes of TCC King reported
a successful meeting on January 30 with the Town Manager Ken Briggs has been appointed
as director of the Planning Board He will be in charge of logistics planning and will
be working in cooperation with Roly Greeley King also described the ground breaking
ceremony held at the Marrett Road site for the new $6,000,000 building for the Masons
This will be an important addition to Lexington and can help bicentennial planning Mr
Maxwell of the Masons will be at the February 28th meeting of LBC
King also said that the Parade Advisory group has re-confirmed the parade route and
direction with a willingness to revise the direction if need be
He also has discussed with Raytheon the subject of some contribution from them in
the form of administrative help It is premature at this time to make an overture now
but Raytheon is receptive to the idea There will be a Joint Military Coordinating
Council meeting tomorrow Linc Cole, Ray Barnes, Don Graham, and King are expected to
attend
Under unfinished business the proposals of Workshop '75 were considered Copies of
these proposals should be in the hands of the members Becky will send to those who do
not have them King drafted a resolution to be sent to Workshop'75 along with a letter
of appreciation LBC approved the resolution and voted to send it to Bill Page Work-
shop '75 has put in industrious hours and their labor deserves to be recognized without
delay,
There was a long discussion of the memo sent by Roly Greeley to the LBC concerning
facilities for visitor's during 1975 and 1976 In commending the thought given to the
problems, LBC took a point by point appraisal of the observations he had made LBC felt
the figures are low for the number of visitors Perhaps there could be a range suggested,
for instance 1-3 million for the grand total
On item two there was some question about the reasoning for private rather than public
property planning Points 3 and 4 seemed reasonable Point 5 had a negative reaction
from the members The committee decided that the first March meeting would be scheduled
for discussion with Roly Greeley on these important areas of planning
Dick Michelson reported that the C of C is still considering a commemorative coin
He showed the Committee examples of two coins which were very attractive One which was
used in Concord NH had particularly fine carving Dick said with that type Lexington
might be able to have a battle scene on their coin Dick also said that he will talk
to the postmaster in Boston about reserving P.O.Box 1975 for use when needed during the
celebration
King informed LBC that a group called the Middlesex County Festival Week Committee
has been formed which is charged with the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the
armed forces Hanscom Field, Lincoln and that area will be used for a parade on July
4th, 1975 Military and quasi-military groups will be participating LBC should be
aware of this activity A copy of their information will be available to LBC and TCC
The reconstruction of Buchman Tavern as a Permanent Memorial project was put
to a vote LBC definitely supports the reconstruction of Buchman but would not like to
see it as the permanent memorial
Dick reported that the Selectmen want LBC to present to them a list of the VIP's
to be invited to the Celebration
The next regular meeting of LBC will be in G-15 of the Town Office Building at 7 p.m
There is a TUM meeting that night so the LBC meeting will start earlier than usual
Respectfully Submitted,
