LEXINGTON BICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE
Minutes - October 25, 1972
The meeting was brought to order by Tony Mancini at 7 35 P.M. Members present
were Warren Butters, Pat Wheatley, Miriam Butts, Becky Nussdorfer, Dick Barnes,
Dick Michelson, Lincoln Cole, and Alan Adams Dick Michelson requested that the minutes
of the last meeting be changed in the following way in the third paragraph, second line
on page one, the word "will" should be changed to "may" The minutes will be so
corrected
Tnny Mancini reported that he had proceeded to dig out any helpful information
that Concord had about the formation of a foundation Concord had formed a non-profit
corporation primarily in the belief that such a corporation would enable them to obtain
funds for a museum as a permanentrmemorial They discovered that there are no funds
available in Washington The Concord corporation is not now really in operation How-
ever, Tony is going to meet with John Collins of the Concord Selectmen and check out
thoroughly the development of such a corporation He will report to a later meeting
He also feels that if such a foundation is formed it should be done strictly in order
to gather funds for a museum or other permanent memorial
Linc reported that he had had a call from King Howard concerning the selection of
someone from LBC to attend the meetings of SILC (Suburban Inter-Regional Liaison
Committee) Lexington has recently joined SILC and the member-towns are sending two
representatives to the meetings There will be one from the Planning Board and the
Planning Board thought LBC could sent the second member from Lexington In the discus-
sion which followed it was decided that LBC is too busy with its own plans and
presently has a member on the Planning Board Therefore the motion was made and seconded
that-LBC-not-send a member—t SILL,and-so-vote3
Linc suggested that the youth of Lexington be represented on LBC He feels that
the young people will want to be involved in the planning of the events of 1975 He
suggested that LBC request the Selectmen make the appointment of a student, ideally from
the Class of '75, as an Ad Hoc member of LBC A motion was made and seconded and the
committee voted to do so
There was a question about the status of the LBC stationery Becky will check
with Ray Barnes
Guests arriving at 8 30 were Philip Parsons representing the Arts and Crafts
Society, Doris Pullen and members of the New England Regional Opera Company, and
Marge Chester representing the Lexington Field and Garden Club

Doris introduced Louise Sargent (Mrs Charles Forbes Sargent) and Joan Lautman
of the N E Regional Opera Co They have made the decision to produce the play
"They Nobly Dar'd" in 1975 The book for this play was written by Doris Pullen in
1963 It was at that time an all amateur production and there were only two shows
on the weekend of April 19, 1963 Doris feels that the NE Opera can keep the spirit
which filled the first staging but have the professional polish which it needs She
introduced Louise Sargent who presented her plans for producing the play in Lexington
in 1975 She proposed to set up a red, white and blue tent perhaps on the Lincoln
Street recreation property, which would seat 1,000 or more It could remain active
from May through October It could also be used for other activities of the Town of
Lexington They would like to have the play on three to four nights of the week Such
a tent can be heated and it can be air conditioned There would be open casting from
the town as well as professional actors They will fund themselves but have to feel
the town is in enthusiastic support They are a non-profit group formed five years
ago If LBC and the Town feel they would be an appropriate event for 1975 and will agree
on the site, they can start to raise money and define their plans LBC was enthusiastic
about the idea We do see some problems including approval for the site, but will
work for an early answer for NE Opera
Mr Parsons said he had been asked by Mrs Fisher to attend the meeting tonight
but as far as he knew the Arts and Crafts Society had not considered any plans for
the Bicentennial as yet
Mrs Chester reported that the Field and Garden Club had contacted Mr O'Connell
about the Harrington property He felt that plans could be worked out So far the
Park Department had put in a walk and are starting to repair the stone wall The
Garden Club says that they will not attempt an elaborate annual garden but have not
drawn any definite plans yet
Since the time was late and Miriam felt her report needed time for discussion,
she suggested she postpone hers until our next meeting LBC agreed
The nedd for an article in the Town Warrant for next March was discussed: A letter
to the Selectmen notifying them that we will have an article in the warrant should be
sent immediately
The meeting adjourned at 9 40 P.M.
Respectfully Submitted,
