BICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE
Minutes--January 12, 1972 f1
1
In the absence of the Chairman, King Howard, Lincoln Cole brought the meeting g
to order in the Legion Room of Cary Memorial Hall at 7 30 p m. Ray Barnes and
Warren Butters were also absent Mr Cole reported the results of the meeting
with the Selectmen in regard to the Warrant articles for the March Town Meeting.
The Selectmen feel that the figure of $25,000 under the first article is too
high and suggested that the LBC ask for $10,000. However, Mr Cole feels that
the Selectmen do back our request for a minimum of $100,000 over the next four
years He waid the second article to select a site committee can be deleted.
The LBC is already empowered to select such a committee and to proceed with plans
This sub-committee will have to produce a site location and preliminary ideas for
a building. The third article for preliminary plans and specs need not ask for more
than $2,000. If these plans are solidified and given approval, 1973 is not too late
to begin construction. The Selectmen questioned Buckman Tavern grounds as a site
selection. The amount necessary for plans under Article 3 can be left open until
the last moment. It was a unanimous vote by those present to substitute $10,000
for the $25,000 in article one; to drop article two entirely and to substitute
$x,000 for the $10,000 under the motion in article three.
Roland Greeley chaired the meeting at 8 00 p m. when Mr Cole had to leave
The discussion centered around the selection of the Site Committee Dick Michel-
son had formed a list of willing members of five civic organizations The
Histonteal Society should have one or two members; and one or two at large The
size of the committee should not be too large, yet it should be representative of
many areas of interest. The discussion had -to be- tabled- momentarily—as-the—invited

guests arrived at 8 30 p m. Herbert Olsen, General Superintendent of the National
Historical Park; Robert Perkins, Manager of the Minuteman National Historical Park,
Mrs Galley Lawrence, Regent DAR; Mrs Eleanor Litchfield DAR; and Mrs Marjorie
Chester of the Garden Club Also Mr Fran McCarron and Mr Larry Gracco of the
Lexington Elks attended the meeting,
Mr Greeley introduced the LBC and suggested that the men from the National
Historical Park begin by describing their plans informally Mr Olsen told the
committee that the Park will start construction of a building in the Fiske Hill
area in July of 1972, which will include two 100 seat auditoriums There will be
a film which will show the origins of the Revolution. The exhibit portion of the
building will be rather limited--no dioramas are expected to be built as they are
very expensive The exhibits will be table-top variety with authentic artifacts
of the area. There will also be planned a "stand-up" chronicle -- a "you are there"

sort of display This building will he at the Benton Animal Hospital site--all
present buildings will be removed This will be the major reception area There
are no specific plans for any special transportation service but some kind of a mini-
bus system may be in the future
The Minuteman National Histf, ric Park will be a day use area There will be no
eating or camping facilities in the Park. There are at present two picnic area one
at the North Bridge and one at Fiske Hill There will be limited activities planned
but the Park will be programmed essentially for one day visits
The conservative estimate for the number of visitors in 1975 is 680,000 There
were 500,000 in 1971 These figures are determined by a count system. Mr Olsen
feels that the projected number for 1975 would be closer to 1,000 000 Visitors
interests are not tabulated
Documents and micro-film library will be housed at Brooks Tavern. Tape Tours
are being considered for the future Mr Perkins could not recall the name of the
firm but will give us this information after checking. The film planned for the
Park will include Lexington activities There are no specific plans for the dates
around April 19, 1975 Dedication of the Park may he delayed until then however
Mr Olsen and Mr Perkins hope to have the President here and will plan accordingly
The Park contains 510 acres now and there are 750 acres authorized It is
planned to restore some of the historic houses and to deed some others back to their
owners It is very expensive to maintain such houses so that the Park cannot afford
to exhibit all ten of the houses within its jurisdiction. The visitors center will be
open all year
The location and re- location of Route 2 and 2A are major problems The Park
hopes to have Route 2 finished by 1975 as far as Crosby Corners

temporary camping areas within towns
Marjorie Chester attended the meeting from the Carden Club There is no report
from their group but they will study possibilities for Garden Club activities
