ARTICLE CREATING COMMITTEE
Article 76 as passed at the 1971 Annual Town Meeting
APTICLE 76: Motion That the Town adopt the following resolution and
instruct the Selectmen to transmit the same, together with
the report of the Town's action thereon, to the Governor,
the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House
of Representatives of the Commonwealth;
Whereas property taxes in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
are among the highest in the nation,
Whereas the Master Tax Plan Commission has referred to the
local property tax as an inequitable and regressive form of
taxation,
Be It Resolved that the Town of Lexington petitions the
Great and General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
to concentrate its attentions on consideration and early
adoption of a revised tax program for the Commonwealth and
its municipalities that will alleviate the undue share of
the burden borne by local property taxpayers

John J Maguire presented the following
Motion That the subject matter of this article be referred
to a study committee composed of the Chairman of the Board
of Selectmen, the Chairman of the Appropriation Committee,
and the Chairman of the School Committee and six citizens of
Lexington to be appointed by the Moderator; and that this
committee report its conclusions and recommendations to the
next annual town meeting

Mr Maguire's motion to refer the subject matter of Article
76 to a committee was declared carried by voice vote.
