t LEXINGTON LIGHTING OPTIONS COMMITTEE ))
Minutes of Jan 17 1990 meeting
In attendance: John Davies, Pete Kovner, Bob Ossman, Myla Kabat-Zinn
Walked through Lexington Center at night and discussed ways to better light the
crosswalks
Discussed using narrow beam, recessed light sources mounted high up on existing
street light poles or buildings to throw focused light within the crosswalks The
effect would be similar to stage spot lights
Noted following problems in existing Center lighting.
Mercury Vapor street light in front of Pewter Pot is dimmer that others. Needs re-
placement.
On Bay Bank side, regarding the incandescent fixtures: 1) the glass housings are
dirty and should be cleaned 2) several bulbs are out and need to be replaced 3) the
proper replacement bulbs are like those in front of the Versailles Restaurant. clear
glass and long lived. (Lite-tronics makes a 20,000 hour bulb)
This particular night, 2 incandescent and 1 mercury vapor street light near corner
of Depot Square were totally off
Several street light poles were too far from crosswalks to illuminate them well or
to be used for mounting narrow beam spots for that purpose
For instance, a pole was needed at the Green on the Tavern side of the street.
Discussed possibility of mounting cross walk lights on top of buildings that contain
Theater Pharmacy and movie theater
Want to find out pedestrian accident rate in crosswalks at night vs daylight.
Discussed Myla & Pete's presentation to Planning Board and pursuing outdoor
security/ yard lighting education and enforcement in subsequent meetings with Bob
Bowyer and Zoning Officer
