HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-03-14-YC-minTown of Lexington Lexington Youth Commission Minutes of the Meeting Held on Thursday,March 14th,2024 A Meeting of the Lexington Youth Commission was held on Thursday,March 14th,2024.The meeting began at 7:00pm in the LHS Library Media Center Absent:Sarah Chen,Sonal Setty,Gabriella Costello,Arden Carney,Hannah Kieval,Alexis Chen,Margot Byers,Jimmy Athens,Kristina Hankins,Debra Hankins,John Kefalas,Tasneem Ghadiali,Aaron Yu,Ava Kieval,Nina Arnold,Doug Lucente,Izzy Barbesino,Adeline Favazzo, Alice Ma, Present:Shannon DeGuglielmo,Duncan Maloney,Sofia Saleeby,Charlie Swan,Jack Gehring, Sadie Maloney,Kimly Nguyen,Keya Doshi,Sarah Kochi,Sophie Read,Eliza Babson,Victoria Wu,Tom Romano,Eva Benet,Sarah Beuttell,Sophie Glavine,Owen Rosenthal,Meera Krishnan. 1.Read and Approve February Meeting Minutes -Sofia read the February meeting minutes which were approved by the committee. 2.Valentine Day Cards and Delivery Debrief -Duncan asked how everyone liked the event. -Shannon described how they really make an impact and the people receiving them really appreciate it. -There were no issues this year with the drop off of the cards! 3.March Community Service Project -Lions Eyeglass Project,Saturday,March 23rd @ 12:00 –2:00 pm at C&W,240 Bedford Street.Headcount of who will be attending,for pizza order. -Duncan described the event.This is where we collect eyeglasses from the lions club.We soak them in water,clean them,and make sure they are in good condition to send off to third world countries. -At the end of the event pizza will be served for everyone to enjoy. -Head count for people who can attend so far:Sarah Kochi,Sarah Beuttell,Sophie Read, Victoria Wu,Sadie Maloney,Kimly Nguyen,Duncan Maloney,Sofia Saleeby,and maybe Charlie Swan. -PEOPLE WHO DID NOT ATTEND MARCH MEETING -Please email Deb or Sofia if you know you can make it. 4.New Member Recruitments -We are looking for incoming Freshman and Sophomores, email Deb for the form,or stop by Room 202 (next to Black Box)at LHS. -Duncan described how we need new incoming freshmen and sophomores to join the committee.Juniors can be accepted into the commission as well. -Sofia brought applications to hand out to anyone who wanted them. -If you need an application email Deb or Sofia for a digital form or stop by room 202 for a physical form. -We need more members but we also need to know you are committed and will make time for the meetings each month and most of the events. 5.Patriots Day Saturday,April 13th -We will be decorating the golf cart,and loading the flags at Arlex Oil,275 Mass Ave,this should take an hour.Time will be determined at April’s meeting. -Patriots Day,Monday.April 15th ,12:00 –4:00 pm –Meeting at 12:00-12:15 across from the East Lexington Fire House,the more the merrier,bring a friend to help hand out flags. -We will walk down the parade route with the golf cart and hand out flags to the people watching. -Sarah Kochi talked about how everyone is so excited to get their flags and that the event goes by very quickly and is very exciting. -Head count for Monday:Owen R,Charlie S,Sarah K,Sophie G,Kimly N,Victoria W, Duncan M. 6.2025 Parade Float ideas –we need at least 4 or 5 ideas to pick from at our September meeting.Please bring ideas or drawings to the April Meeting. -The committee started off this conversation by coming up with ideas for the 2025 parade float. -The ideas included:A big town logo,the Massachusetts flag,the mayflower,fireworks or confetti shot out of muskets. -Tom Romano had an idea of throwing things out in the crowd for people to catch.These items would be LYC branded. -Shannon brought up an idea around celebrating veterans throughout our history.She mentioned doing something along the lines of the Vietnam memorial but have it be personalized with names of those who fought. 7.Tom’s Time Silent Disco: -The silent disco is tomorrow at the community center from 8pm-10pm.There will be music and snacks. -Tom asked for music suggestions.If anyone wants to share a playlist with Tom,feel free to share it with him through his email:.tromano@lexingtonma.gov Outdoor movie: -On May 10 there will be an outdoor movie around 8pm.There are 5 movie options: Ferris Bueller's Day off,Get Smart,Grown ups,Pitch Perfect,and Talladega Nights. -At the event there will be a 30 ft outdoor movie screen with snacks and drinks. 8.Doug -Town Business,Article 43 Voting Rights 16 and Older -There is talk about changing the age teenagers in Lexington can vote. -This would change the voting age to 16 but only for town elections. -Many on the committee were interested in voting.Shannon brought up the idea of some sort of informational session that could be held to educate teenagers. -Many suggested that it would be a great idea to hold the informational session during an I-block. 9.Closing Comments -Please pick up an application if you are interested!!For a digital copy,email Deb or Sofia.For a physical copy,stop by room 202.
