Guided by the results of the community conversations, focus groups and the survey, the Selectmen see the core values of our citizens as: (1) Quality public education; (2) Preservation of a level of open space that maintains our semi-rural character; (3) A public safety establishment which enables Lexingtonians both to be safe and feel safe; and (4) Affordability to the point where we can maintain and enhance our economic diversity In addition, we want to develop strategies and tactics which nurture a sense of community in our Town. Given these core values, the Steering Committee shall: (1) Establish clear measures for each value (What exactly does "quality education" and "public safety" mean and how do you know when you have it?) (2) Determine the costs, financial and otherwise, of achieving these measures by FY 2000 (3) Utilizing fiscal and demographic data, project the funds likely to be available to the town in the next five years to achieve the goals (4) Review and evaluate possible sources of new revenue and potential significant savings in current expenditures (5) Compare the available funds with those required to reach the goals and present several trade-offs as examples of the kind of choices which the town needs to make. In carrying out its charge, the Committee shall: (1) Recruit liaison personnel from the School Committee, Planning Board, Appropriation Committee and Capital Expenditures Committee.
