Chair Paul O’Shaughnessy called the February 1, 2024 Historic Districts Commission meeting to
order at 6:06pm.
FORMAL HEARING
Chair Paul O’Shaughnessy opened the formal hearing for 1729 Massachusetts Avenue, exterior
alterations (Murals in the rear) in the Battle Green Historic District

The applicants explained the proposed mural painting at rear façade at 1729 Massachusetts Avenue.
The Commission felt this application was appropriate.
Jerry Michelson, Chair of a Lexington Center Committee, stated that the mural in the rear was very
appropriate.
Motion was granted and seconded to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior changes to
1729 Massachusetts Avenue. Motion carried, all in favor.

The applicants explained the proposed rooftop solar panels plans at 812 Mass Ave.
Paul O’Shaughnessy will serve as liaison for this application. This hearing will continue to March HDC
meeting.

INFORMAL HEARING
A public art installation in Lexington in celebration of the semiquincentennial 2024-2026
Ms. Tung explained the proposed at least 4 life-size fiberglass horses plans which will be decoratively
painted or mosaic tiled by jury-selected artists. These artworks were proposed to be installed in Lexington
Center during the celebratory period from summer of 2024 through 2026. The Commission reviewed the
proposed plans and agreed to review the formal application prior to installation with the size of the
sculpture, the location, and the mounting technique.
Jerry Michelson, Chair of a Lexington Center Committee, stated that those artworks can be a fun creative
project.

The HDC briefly discussed the question of whether the proposed “250 Countdown Calendar Clock”
installed in front of Town Hall falls under its review during the meeting. The Commission agreed that
this structure be "excluded from the provisions" of HDC enabling act based on the official celebration
language and temporary nature of the work.
