The SolAware Initiative
Problem:
Sun overexposure can cause sunburns, premature skin -aging and it is the key underlying
reason for skin cancer. All of which are preventable through sun safety education and proper skin
protection.
It is recommended that individuals do not spend more than an hour in the sun without
proper protection which includes using sunscreen, seeking shade and/or wearing protecting
clothing material. In 2013, only 13% of girls and 7% of boys in high school reported that they
routinely use SPF15+ sunscreen when being outside for at least an hour on a sunny day.
Unfortunately, in most cases people do not know that they have gotten sunburnt until
hours later or the next day, making it hard to realize the consequences of sun overexposure in
real-time; hence individuals easily overlook the hidden dangers of the sun.
Solution:
SolAware Technologies is developing a product that
aims to raise awareness of the real-time dangers of
sun overexposure through digital technology, and at
the same time promoting sun safety behaviors.
The product is an educational UV display board (fig.1)
that guides individuals by displaying real-time local UV
index in a proprietary form, called the SolAware
IndexTM (SAI), a time form factor ranging from 10-60
minutes based on the actual level of UV radiation. The
unit is a combination of an analog 2 -digit display that
shows the SAI and a rotating UV sensor that measures
the real-time local UV levels.

Proposed collaboration itb Lexington, IMA
The SolAware team would like to conduct a marketing experiment in collaboration with the Town
of Lexington, at no cost for the town. The study would span a total of one week while we conduct three
different scenarios for two days each. The team can see the SolAware UV Display Board being applicable
in various locations throughout Lexington such as the Town Pool/ Lexington Track and Field Center, the
Lexington Gazebo, Hayden Recreational Center, Lincoln Field and in the Lexington Center.
However, with one member of the team being a resident of Lexington over 20 years, we would
suggest the Town Pool/ Lexington Track and Field Center due to the heavy foot traffic and amount of
activities. The purpose the experiment is to collect data to validate positive behavioral change influenced
by the SolAware UV display; meanwhile increasing the awareness of the hidden dangers of the sun
overexposure within the Lexington Community.
Experimental Design Layout
Research Question/ Problem:
Will the publicly displayed SolAware lndexTM guide individuals to practice sun burn preventative actions,
like the usage of sunscreen.
Aim of Study:
To gauge if displaying the SolAware lndexTM will increase sunscreen usage among individuals.
Hypothesis:
If we provide the public with additional knowledge on the time frame they can develop sunburn, then
the public will take extra preventative actions in protecting themselves in the format of using sunscreen.
Independent Variable:
SolAware UV Display.
Dependent Variable(s):
1. Percentage of people using sunscreen.
2. Amount of sunscreen used from dispenser.
Equipment that we will use:
1. SPF 30 Sunscreen with dispenser
2. SolAware UV Display
3. Table top
4. Lap Counter
5. Pen & Paper
6. Laptop / Tablet

Experimental Procedure:
Overview:
The study will consist of three different scenarios:
1. Behavior without visual stimuli or sunscreen.
2. Behavior without visual stimuli but with sunscreen
3. Behavior with visual stimuli and sunscreen
Proposed Location(s)*: Town Pool / Track and Field Center
Proposed Duration*: 6 days (2 days for each scenario)
*Open to suggestions, and will be decided based on common agreement
Total Cost to the town: 0$
The conditions in which each study day is conducted are similar in terms of:
1. Time of day: starting at 09:00 and ending at 15:00
2. Temperature: between 85-95F
3. Weather: sunny to little overcast
Scenari#1: Behavior without visual stimuli or sunscirlspenser
Equipment:
1. Table for observation
2. Lap counter
3. Simple survey
4. Pen & paper or laptop/tablet for recording results
5. Free suntan lotion to reward individuals who participate in survey and do not have lotion
(optional)
Procedure:
1. Make sure conditions are favorable for the study
2. Obtain necessary materials, set up equipment
3. Record number of guests who enter the location
4. Observe people's behavior and record results
5. Ask guest to participate in quick survey
6. Summarize data at the end of clay.
Scenario #2: Behavior with sunscreen but without visual stimuh
Equipment:
1. Table for observation
2. Lap counter
3. Simple survey
4. Pen & paper or laptop/tablet for recording results
5. Sunscreen dispenser with SPF 30 Suntan lotion
Procedure:
1. Make sure conditions are favorable for the study
2. Obtain necessary materials, set up equipment
a. Set up sunscreen dispenser at the entrance for maximum visibility by guests
b. Set up table across from dispenser so that it does not influence the guests' decisions
3. Record number of guests who enter the location and who use the free sunscreen dispenser
4. Observe people's behavior and record results
5. Ask guest to participate in quick survey
6. Summarize data at the end of day.
Scenario #3: Behavior with Visual Stimuli and Sunscreen dispenser
Equipment:
1. Table for observation
2. Lap counter
3. Simple survey
4. Pen & paper or laptop/tablet for recording results
5. Sunscreen dispenser with SPF 30 Suntan lotion
6. SolAware UV Display - Visual Stimuli
Procedure:
1. Make sure conditions are favorable for the study
2. Obtain necessary materials, set up equipment
c. Set up sunscreen dispenser at the entrance for maximum visibility by guests
a. Set up visual stimuli above sunscreen dispenser for maximum visibility
d. Set up table across from dispenser so that it does not influence the guests' decisions
3. Record number of guests who enter the location and who use the free sunscreen dispenser
4. Observe people's behavior and record results
5. Ask guest to participate in quick survey
6. Summarize data at the end of day.
