Minutes of Meeting
June 21, 2017
A meeting of the Recreation Committee was held on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 6:00pm in Room 237
of the Lexington Community Center, 39 Marrett Road, Lexington.
Members Present: Rick DeAngelis, Jason Denoncourt, Lisah Rhodes, Sandra Shaw, and Ruixi Yuan
Staff Present: Melissa Battite, Director of Recreation and Community Programs, Peter
Coleman, Assistant Director of Recreation, and Christine Dean, Community
Center Director
Others Present: Doug Lucente (Board of Selectmen liaison) and Zachary Robbins and Ferenc
Fazekas (SolAware Technologies)
1. Meeting Minutes from May 17, 2017
th
The Recreation Committee reviewed the minutes from the May 17 meeting and Sandra Shaw
requested that some edits be made. After a brief discussion, Lisah Rhodes moved and Sandra
Shaw seconded approval of the revised Recreation Committee Minutes of May 17, 2017. The
Recreation Committee voted 3-0 to approve the revised minutes of May 17, 2017.
2. SolAware Initiative
Zachary Robbins and Ferenc Fazekas of SolAware Technologies presented a proposal for a pilot
program in Lexington this summer. SolAware is dedicated to increasing sun safety and raising
awareness about the invisible dangers of solar rays. The pilot would include placing a UV
prototype display board at Lincoln Park. The higher the UV level is, the less time that is needed
before getting a sunburn. The display would show the correlation between the UV index and the
amount of time it would take before experiencing a sunburn and it would also contain a sunscreen
dispenser that park goers could use. Through this pilot, the data that SolAware would like to
obtain is how many people are aware of the dangers of the sun and how many people use
sunscreen. The power source for the display is intended to be solar with electric as the back-up.
The Recreation Committee then asked Mr. Robbins and Mr. Fazekas some questions about their
proposal and the concept of having the display board at Lincoln Park. After some consideration,
Rick DeAngelis, Chairman of the Recreation Committee made the following motion: The
Recreation Committee moves to approve the SolAware pilot program and allow the installation of
the UV index system on a demonstration basis for two weekends at Lincoln Park this summer.
Lisah Rhodes seconded the motion. The Recreation Committee voted 4-0 to approve.
3. Pelham Property Update
The Recreation Committee discussed the 20 Pelham Road property. The Board of Selectmen
th
discussed this issue at their meeting on Monday, June 5 and there was a joint summit with the
Board of Selectmen, School Committee, Capital Expenditures Committee, and Appropriation
thth
Committee on Thursday, June 8 to discuss this topic. At the summit on June 8, it was
determined that while the architect will look at the campus of 39 Marrett Road and 20 Pelham
Road as one property, the proposal that will be presented at Special Town Meeting in the fall will
2
will also consider options at both 20 Pelham Road and 39 Marrett Road for where the Phase 2
Community Center renovations could be implemented and will report back to the Board of
Selectmen with its findings in approximately 4-6 weeks. Doug Lucente, liaison from the Board
of Selectmen, indicated that the School Committee is desperate for this space and that the cost for
the new construction is not considerably more than the renovation option. Members of the
Recreation Committee expressed their disappointment and frustration with the process. Rick
DeAngelis, Chairman of the Recreation Committee, believed that not enough time was given to
vet the various options properly. Sandra Shaw added that when the purchase of 20 Pelham
property was initially considered at Town Meeting, it was presented that use of the site would be
split between the School Department and the Community Center. As things stand now, the
proposal going forward does not call for split-use.
4. Site Visits
The Recreation Committee took a tour of the various Recreation parks, playgrounds, and facilities
throughout the community. The site visits included the Center Recreation Complex, Lincoln
Park, Marvin Park, Kinneens Park, Diamond Middle School, and Adams Park.
th
The next meeting of the Recreation Committee is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 19,
2017 at 6:00pm at the Pine Meadows Golf Club, 255 Cedar Street, Lexington.
The June 21, 2017 meeting of the Recreation Committee adjourned at 6:35pm and was followed by the
site visits.
Respectfully submitted,
Peter Coleman
