The whole number of' in the State for the year ending
Dec. 31, 1854, was 21.414. Males 10.710—females 10.558 ; and
146 was classed as of' uncertain sex. Americans 16.801—foreign-
ers 3.595—unknown 1.018. The aveaage age for each individu-
al to have been 27-16 years. -Six individuals, two males and
four females, died during the year, who hact lived to a greater age
than one hundred years.

The whole number of births registered in the State for the
year ending Dec. 31, 1854, was 31,997. Males, 16,352 ; females,
15,469 ; and 176 were of those whose sex could not be ascer-
tained. 16,470 were the children of American parents ; 13,866
were born of parents, one or both of whom were of foreign birth ;
1,661 were returned without designating the nativity of parents.
During the year there were born, in plurality cases, 600 children;
of these, 312 were males, 288 females. 7 cases of triplets.
The number of marriages solemnized during the year 1854,
according to the returns, was 13,683 ; 7,492 of the persons mar-
ried were of American birth ; 4,797 were of foreign birth ; 542
were American grooms to brides of foreign birth; 512 American
brides to foreign husbands ; 340 the nativity was not ascertain- ,
ed. The oldest male married. was 94 years ; the oldest female 80.
The youngest male married was 16 years ; the youngest female 13.
There were four towns in the State in which no marriage was sol-
emnized ;and seven towns in which but one marriage is registered.
