HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-06-08-TREE-min Lexington Tree Committee Town of Lexington, Massachusetts 201 Bedford Street, Samuel Hadley Public Services Building, Room 125 Minutes, Meeting of June 8, 2017 Attendees: Jewel Kuljian, Karen Longeteig, Nancy Sofen, Gerry Paul, Anne Senning, James Wood, John Frey (Chairman). Gerry Paul took his turn as scribe. 1. Approved last month's meeting minutes. 2. Tree removal activity – postponed. 3. Tree Management Manual update. Anne Senning presented the changes in the manual for the Tree Bylaw. The Tree Committee voted to approve the changes and agreed that the name of the manual would be unchanged since it is referenced in the Bylaw. 4. Spring tree planting status - postponed. 5. Selectmen's Annual Goal Setting - Based on the original list created by Anne and John, we drafted 3 goals that Anne will write up and will be attached to the minutes: - ensuring inventory data is collected - support/funding to educate citizens on the Asian Longhorn Beetle and Emerald Ash Borer threats. - development/support of a policy to identify tree planting locations and tree planting best practices 6. In support of the last goal above, Gerry will lead a subcommittee of Jim, Nancy, and Karen (when available) to start work on the policy 7. Sidewalk reconstruction on Mass Ave between Fottler and Bow. We voted to send a letter to the Town Highway Superintendent offering to work with him to identify additional tree planting locations. Gerry will draft the letter and see if the East Lexington Civic Association want to participate also. 8. Jim reported on options for preventing soil compaction after tree planting. He explained that Silva cells, structural soil, and tree irrigation systems have significant drawbacks. He will investigate the use of plastic tree grates.
