LHS School Site Council Meeting met on May 8, 2017 from 5:30 — 7:00 PM in the Library Media
Center.
Present: Laura Lasa, Suzanne Lau, Shiv Chandra, Polly Kienle, Nancy Shepard, Elise Santiago,
Elise Rowley, Liz Curtin, Leslie Zales

IL Announcements from Council members
• LHS Musical "Rags" presented last weekend was excellent
• Superintendent Mary Czajkowski announced the next principal of LHS is Robert Shaw
• LHS was well represented at the MA State Science and Engineering fair
III. Final draft of Evening Start Time Recommendations
• No changes to the final draft of recommendations to the new principal
• May need guidelines for conflicts that arise between events, e.g., ending time for after-
school events may run into earlier start time for evening events.
IV. Additional Council Member Announcement
• Request to consider therapy dogs during test times and exam periods
o This proposal has been considered in a couple scenarios several times in the past
o Primary concerns include liability if someone is injured and allergies are triggered
o A proposal to LEF (grant) to have a therapy dog on campus is under consideration.
Further investigation with the Board of Health and other schools who have such
programs has been requested by the LEF.
V. School Improvement Plan 2017-2018
• Update on outcomes for the 2016-2017 SIP for School Culture Goal 1: Competitive school
culture results to include Youth Risk Behavior data, enrollment in AP courses and number
of transcripts processed.
• New SIP template used to brainstorm topics under four goal areas
• Goal 1: Academic
o What we would like all students to be able to do when they leave high
school.
o What intentional instructional practices will the school do to promote
collaboration and independent learning?
• Goal 2: Social Emotional
o What can the school do to help students feel confident and competent to
use inner and external resources in school and outside the school environment?
o What is the most critical aspect of school culture that needs to be
addressed?
o What does it mean to be a citizen of LHS, Lexington, and a citizen of the
larger world?
• Goal 3: I Block
o Identify steps to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of I Block
• Goal 4: Emergency Response Readiness
o Transfer incomplete goals from the 2016-2017 SIP to the 2017-2018 SIP
