Call to order
Review of Work Group progress
Liaisons reported on the status of their respective working groups. The issues discussed included
a need for more members and broader representation on certain working groups.
Certain working groups also expressed a desire for information indicating trends and projections.
While it is within the staff’s capacity to develop such a sheet for all working groups, individual
requests for information other than what already exists cannot be accommodated. An example
would be a one-page summary of information about trends in Lexington over the last 5, 10, or 20
years (population, budgets, enrollment, etc). It was noted that all of the working groups will
have a staff presence of a least two per group.
The liaison’s role as part of the working group was also revisited. While the liaison does serve a
critical function of coordination between the working groups, Steering Committee, and staff, the
responsibilities should not be overburdening. Liaisons should assist the working groups by
providing strategic direction when needed and articulating the needs of the group to the Steering
Committee.
Discussion of Work Group membership issues
Liaisons reported that some of the groups (Sense of Community, Fiscal Stability) have identified
a need to broaden their representation. All working groups need student members and the
Educational Excellence group would also like a teacher.
Final review of CPG orientation meeting agenda and documents
The committee discussed the upcoming CPG orientation, which was originally scheduled for a
week earlier, but was postponed because of bad weather. Staff called all those who had RSVP’d
to notify them of the postponement. A postcard will be mailed out to all prospective members
notifying them of the new date and time. Steering Committee members suggested that the 2020
Vision website be presented to attendees of the orientation and used as a means of
communication among CPG members.
Preliminary planning for Futures Panel
Members were asked to think of individuals to nominate to the futures panel.
Update on public communications strategy
The Public Communication subcommittee met earlier on January 14 to develop an outreach
strategy. The strategy will focus on publishing two articles per month in the Lexington
Minuteman and may make use of Cable Television and the Northwest Section of the Boston
Globe. We may also want to major press releases to community groups.
