HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-02-02-DIAMOND-minDiamond Middle School Site Council Meeting 2/2/2017 7:00 am Members present: Curt Barrentine, Sawhney Deepika, Dan Strollo, Yi Yang, Catherine Findlay, Jennifer Turner, Sean Han Last meeting's minutes were approved II. Principal's Report • LEF school community grant was approved • Drummer will be coming for all school event as well as doing direct instruction in classes in French Drum - themed incentives will be purchased Sammy Amman and Rachel Alexander will lead students in painting mural(s). They are still scouting sites and will verify them with the contractor • PTA club stipends will stay one more year until contract negotiation time. We are waiting to hear this officially from the business office. • Parent Conference Survey Result: 179 responses • We'll still trying to figure out what the community and the school think the purpose of the conference is Next step is staff focus groups later in February Parents and staff results will be compared, and this will probably be a year -long conversation. There probably won't be major changes for next year's conferences. • Are there other models that other schools use that we could consider? Staff survey results about effectiveness of Ms. Turner's building leadership so far this year Communication and culture has improved Staff generally feel informed and valued People did not feel overwhelmed about communication Need for continued communication about weekly goings on There is a real and perceived difference between on team and off team teachers. This came through again in the survey • Staff asked for clarification of roles /responsibility of the principal and assistant principals • Desire to develop a shared vision for next year. This year's theme was building relationships. • Desire for more collaborative communication during faculty meetings • Talked about the possible need for a principal's mid -year assessment across the district or some type of climate survey /check -in at the end of the year • Talked about the migration to Gmail; Google groups could help to promote collaboration amongst the staff. • Would Google groups also help to get parents involved? • Ms. Turner has been running principal advisory meetings this year • VVe have not yet had an uptick in stomach or other viruses, but we're being more careful III. Staff Report: • Staff seem to be comfortable with the format and decisions of the classroom moves committee IV. Mid -Year Review of SIP • First Goal is improving academic performance for all students. Ms. Turner believes this is happening and has become regular practice in the building • VVe will continue to discuss the SIP at further site council meetings V. Member Input • Discussion about the health curriculum and parents' concerns about sensitive sexual topics • Question about Rising 6th -grade parent night VI. Adjournment
