Minutes of Meeting
February 23, 2017
A meeting of the Community Center Program Advisory Committee was held on Thursday,
February 23rd at 7:00 p.m. at the Lexington Community Center, 39 Marrett Road, Lexington.
Meeting Attendees: Members - Alessandro Alessandrini, Nancy Adler, Dan Palant, Nancy Shepard
(Chair), Archana Singhal
Ex- Officio Member Attendees: Sheila Butts (Community Center Director), Melissa Battite (Director
of Recreation & Community Programs) Charlotte Rodgers (Director of Human Services)
Unable to attend: Lisah Rhodes, John Zhu.
The meeting was called to order at 7:OOpm.
1. Introductions
Melissa Battite attended for the first time. She introduced herself and the committee members
introduced themselves.
2. Minutes of January 12, 2016
The minutes from the January meeting were reviewed and unanimously accepted.
3. Liaison Reports and Discussion of Programming
• We discussed the idea of a Winter Carnival that could involve indoor activities and
weather permitting, outdoor activities like making snow sculptures and sledding. Dan
Palant has made a connection to someone who could help with snow sculptures.
• CPR- We discussed the idea of offering CPR training to Lexington residents. For the next
meeting, Melissa and Charlotte will compile a list of the current CPR class offerings.
Tom Romano is applying for a grant from the Community Endowment of Lexington for
CPR classes. The Dana Home Foundation provides funding for the Grandparents and
Others CPR course.
• Archana Singhal reported that the East Lexington Civic Association and IAL will be co-
sponsoring a candidates forum on Saturday, February 25th at the Community Center.
• Intergenerational programming -
o Charlotte Rodgers said there will be an April school vacation program called
"Grandparents Gone Wired ". LHS students will help seniors navigate their devices.

The Teen Advisory Board from the Cary Library also offers a Teen Tech Program
that helps seniors with technology issues.
o Tournaments for Ping Pong and Billiards were discussed.
• Archana Singhal suggested that the Community Center might want to offer tax
preparation classes that would be targeted for a variety of age groups.
• Dan Palant talked to Jeff Leonard about the idea of Jazz nights at the Community Center.
Timing could be an issue. The committee also talked about whether admission could be
charged. More info is needed.
• Nancy Adler. brought up the idea of whether a Friends of CC group might be a good idea
at some point. This will be an on -going discussion. She also encouraged the formation of
partnerships with other groups in town and continuing to look for ways to get information
out about the activities and programs at the Community Center.
4. Programming at Pelham Property
• The plans for the Pelham Property are moving forward. There will be a presentation to
the BOS on 2/27.
Sandro Alessandrini suggested that Indoor Soccer (Futsol) might be a good activity for
the Pelham gym. Melissa Battite and Sheila Butts noted that this program is currently on
the list of activities that would be a good fit for Pelham Road.
5. Community Center Director's Report
• Sheila reports that for the Spring Session there are 27 Youth, 28 Adult and 60+ and 15
60+ classes being offered.
• The Community Center is applying to the Dana Home Foundation for funding for the
"Forever Fit" program. The committee voted unanimously to send a letter of support for
the application.
• Attendance- Total attendance sine the CC opened is 174,171. The average daily
attendance is 365.
• Sheila announced that she will be retiring on May 5th Melissa Battite reported that the
search for a replacement has begun.
Next Steps for Committee Members:
o Continue to reach out to your constituencies for program ideas.
o Think of ways to get information on Community Center programs to people in town.
o The Recreation Committee will be meeting on April 19th at 7pm at the Community
Center if anyone would like to attend.
• The next Community Center Program Advisory Committee meeting will be held on
March 23th at 7pm.
• Meeting adjourned at 8:45.
