Meeting held at Lexington Community Center, Room 237 at 8:00 a.m.
Committee welcomed guest Ms. Tonya Gisolfi of 20/20’s Asian Culture sub committee
Ms. Gisolfi briefed the committee on meetings with three representatives from Walnut
Valley School in CA. WVS has very similar diversity student body as LHS’s with higher
percentage of Asian students. The representatives met with school committee and town
officials, and presented diversity and outreach programs at WVS.
Carry Library celebrated its newly finished renovation on Oct 15. The Library will
distribute the flyers for the book discussion on “Common Ground.” The events’ detail is
also on HRC’s website.
The attendance for 911 Remembrance gathering was lower this year according to Pastor
Maracle. It may need more advertising on the event or people started to have fatigue 15
years after the horrific event.
Culture conflicts at schools. A Native American student was denied to be addressed by
his Mohawk name, and an African American student was called the N-word. The
committee discussed how the school faculties can better handle the situations and be
more sensitive and respectful to students’ diverse backgrounds.
