HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-03-04-LHRC-min Lexington Human Rights Committee Meeting Minutes March 4, 2016 Present: Judy Crocker, Officer Aidan Evelyn, Koren Stembndge, Charlotte Rogers, Sean Osborne, Linda Vine, Bonnie Brodner, Knstie Demirev, Fuang-Ying Huang, and Pastor Brent Maracle Guest: Koren Stembndge, Cary Memorial Library Director Meeting held at Lexington Community Center, Room 237 at 8 00 a.m. Old Business • HRC is approved to participate in the Patnates Day parade on April 18th Members are encouraged to recruit others to join in the parade • WIN program lead by Clarke teacher Danielle Paddols is recruiting volunteers to facilitate discussions in culture efficiency • Conflict resolution/defusing training by Aidan Evelyn and Knstie Demirev next meeting. New Initiatives to promote culture and religious diversity in Lexington • Collaborate with Cary Library in the eight-week discussion on culture and religions • HRC members are to bring a book idea/recommendation to the next meeting and propose then we will discuss possible facilitators to help us sponsor a fall 2016 program. • Collaborate with LICA on "Open Door"program planned for the spring of 2017 which allows participating faith organizations to open their doors to others with the goal of learning about a variety of faith communities Library Initiatives • "Check out a Person"program at the library that resident can check out a volunteer in different religions/culture background to discuss/ask questions freely • "Idea Wall"in the library displaying photos by residents to show demographic diversity in Lexington. Department Reports • Human Service Dept. hosts family nights with games, arts and crafts, and movies Next family movie night is Friday, March 11th This new program is growing in popularity at the Community Center • Parenting Program will take place at the Community Center on Saturday, March 19th The response has been tremendous to this program which again is a relatively new offering to the community • No incident report from Police Dept. The next meeting is on April 1, 2016 at 8 OOAM at Lexington Community Center, Room 237 Meeting adjourned at 9 30 am
