HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-11-06-LHRC-min Lexington Human Rights Committee Meeting Minutes November 6, 2015 Present : Al Zabin, Linda Vine, Aidan Evelyn, Jim Barry, Sean Osborne, Fuang-Ying Huang, Norman Cohen – BOS liaison, Bhumip Khasnabish, Jeffrey Toronto, Charlotte Rogers, Kristie Demirev, and Pastor Brent Maracle Meeting held at Lexington Community Center, Room 237 at 8:00 a.m. Department Updates Human Services, Police, Schools: Human Service Department program seasonal program updates: Fuel Assistance program has started accepting applications; those who are eligible for the program are also eligible for the water/sewer discount, Sand Project for seniors will be offered again with the help of the Rotary Club, Thanksgiving Dinner for seniors sponsored by Lions’ Club, Christmas meals sponsored by the Temples Assorted Gift cards for families with children. Other Updates include: Mental health issues continued to be a concern from the staff and schools perspective. Alcohol and drug use by Lexington students although higher than the state average, have begun to decline over the last year. No incidents reported from Police Department – Lexington Public School is seeking a volunteer liaison to HRCLinda reached out to the department and hopes to have a name submitted to the BOS for appointment. Sean reported on Clarke teacher Danielle Paddles progress on her WIN (What I need) program. For Culture Proficiency program, Task - Danielle will send a syllabus and meet with HRC in Dec. 2015 and to start the program in Jan of 2016. HRC discussed outreach and how to coordinate with other groups in town with similar interest, such as Veteran’s Day, MLK Day, Patriots’ Day and Memorial Day parades. HRC will hand distribute flyers and, or bookmarks at various town activities to outreach and promote the Committee and its mission. Task - Linda, Jeffrey, Charlotte and Kristie are to work on the content of the HRC flyer Task - Sean will work on the bookmark. The HRC then discussed options for developing a 2016 work-plan. Linda was asked to invite Koren Stembridge, Cary Memorial Library Director to an upcoming meeting in order to explore different partnerships. The meeting adjourned at 9: 45 AM. The next meeting is on Dec. 4, 2015 at 8:00AM
