Lexington Human Rights Committee
Meeting Minutes
May 6, 2016
Present
: Officer Aidan Evelyn, Lt. Jim Barry, Koren Stembridge, Norman Cohen,
Jeffrey Toronto, Al Zabin, Sean Osborne, Linda Vine, Bonnie Brodner, Kristie Demirev,
and Fuang-Ying Huang
Meeting held at Lexington Community Center, Room 237 at 8:00 a.m.
The committee selected Common Ground: A Turbulent Decade in the Lives of Three
American Families by J. Anthony Lukas for the Community Read project. There will be a
panel discussion followed by a facilitated discussion. A sub-committee is formed with
Jeffrey, Sean, Bonnie and Fuang-Ying. To Do’s:
Ms. Stembridge at CML and Linda will coordinate and set the dates for the two
events with panel discussion in mid or late Oct. and facilitated discussion in mid
Nov.
Press release to publicize the events.
CML prints flyers for distribution on Discovery Day.
CML orders copies of the book.
Research discussion questions.
Recommend potential schoolers for panel discussions and facilitated discussion.
Town may have funding for honorarium for the speaker/facilitator.
Department Reports:
Human Service Dept.
- Youth Coalition meeting last Wednesday on underage drinking, student stress,
mental health, and “buddy bench”, a bench where students in need can seek comfort from
a volunteer follow student.
- A 4 Mondays “Girls Group” for middle school students starts on May 16th
where students socialize, learn coping skills and build self-esteem.
- School counselors and selected school personal will start SBRIT training
(Screening, Brief Interventions, and Referral to Treatment).
School Dept. – Mrs. Paddol’s “Creating a Culture of Understanding” program

starts on May 6.
No incident report from Police Dept.

CML will host a discussion on mass incarceration on June 21.
The next meeting is on June 3, 2016 at 8:00AM at Lexington Community Center, Room
237.
