Today’s presenters, Ken Ito and Kelly Carr from BETA, were introduced by John Livsey, Town Engineer. The BETA representatives led a PowerPoint presentation and review of the conceptual design work that has been done to date by previous committees and in previous public meetings. There ensued a discussion of the importance of gateways to Lexington Center, selection of uniform materials, continuity, gathering areas, street lighting, and interpretive elements to be incorporated into the design including the pavements. Further discussion covered the need to gather information necessary to make recommendations for sidewalk materials and design. Specifications and the importance of installation methods were discussed, funding (including the possible availability of CPA funding), scope of the project, and goals for future meetings. A recommendation was made that the Committee would benefit from input from experts on ADA and related requirements to accommodate to the extent possible the safety and convenience of pedestrians, including those with disabilities. A consensus was reached that we invite each of Tom Hopkins from the Mass. Architectural Access Board, and Deb Ryan of BETA to a future meeting to discuss theseconsiderations in more detail. After discussion, the next two meetings were set for 6/23 and 6/28, same time. Anne Eccles agreed to prepare a presentation for the next meeting to discuss sidewalk materials, and methods of installation, scheduled for 6/23. There was also a brief discussion of the original Sasaki report, and the need to update the Town Website on the Streetscape work. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 10 AM.
