HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-07-19-LHRC-minTown of Lexington Human Rights Committee Meeting Minutes for Wednesday,July 19,2023 Conducted by Remote Participation LHRC MEMBERS PRESENT Christina Lin,Chair (CL);Stephanie Hsu,Vice-Chair (SH);Salvador Jaramillo (SJ);Tanya Gisolfi (TG); Mona D.Roy (MDR);Larry Freeman -Lexington Public School District (LF);Lieutenant Colleen Dunbar -Town of Lexington Police (CD) Attending:Hemali Shah,Town of Lexington Chief Equity Officer;Mark Sandeen,Select Board Liaison The minutes recorded by Christina Lin,LHRC Chair 1.Call to order –Meeting commenced at 12:03PM with the following members present for a quorum:CL,SH,MDR,SJ,LF,and CD. 2.Review Letter to Lexington Observer -please see final letter attached to the minutes.Letter was approved by a vote of 5-0 in favor of submitting the Letter to the Editor at Lexington Observer.Members voting are CL,SH,SJ,MDR,and CD. 3.Unexpected Items Not Reasonably Anticipated in Advance - a.A recent petition to stop the “Serious Talks”curriculum at LPS was distributed and raised questions about LGBTQIA identity lessons.The committee discussed and agreed to making a statement at the upcoming School Committee meeting to support the LGBTQ+community and to also support all education that is rooted in inclusion and makes these spaces safer for all. b.A member pointed out that all parents have a right to question the schools and that schools have a responsibility to be transparent.While they believe the schools have been sufficiently transparent,the committee should not assume that all feel this way. 4.Meeting adjourned at 1:23PM 5.Next meeting to be determined 1625 MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE •LEXINGTON,MASSACHUSETTS 02420
