Reports/Updates
:
• Keith updated the Repair Log to note a post knocked over by a plow on Route B at Spring St.
All routes will be walked in the next couple of weeks to check for other needed repairs. And
we should all keep our eyes open for needed updates as we make our rounds.
• We decided to add “F” stickers from the existing Route F, along Route E, to the Bikeway
through Meagherville. This makes Route F a more contiguous part of the trail network.
• Bob, Peggy, and Keith walked Route E to Fiske Hill to the Aloft/Element hotels. This would
be a leg leading, eventually, to Cranberry Hill and down to Lincoln St. They met with Richard
Canale of the Planning Board and the Scenic Byway committee (?) to discuss moving one
existing sign and installing two posts for ACROSS signs. Richard will speak with Nancy Nel-
son of the Minute Man National Historical Park. In the long term, GCC will also need to get
permission from the Cambridge Water Department for use of the trail in the Hobbs Brook
area.
• Regarding the abutter concerns on Garfield Street, we are waiting on the Town Manager’s
office to consult with Town Counsel.
• Victory Garden Way will come before Town Meeting this spring to become an accepted
street. This may make it possible for us to re-route Route A through Victory Garden Way,
thus avoiding the Diamond Middle School driveway. It is unclear if it will be possible to add a
new crosswalk at the end of VGW on Hancock St.
• Keith met with Jim Freehling of Brookhaven to discuss the trail work in conjunction with new
construction there. It would make a good connection through to Concord Ave and Beaver
Brook North.
• Brochure revisions are ongoing. Ruth is working on the text edits, Mike has the maps about
ready, and Susan has talked with the printer. We will have 15,000 brochures printed, at a
cost of $1900.00. On the current schedule they will be ready by Patriots Day.
• Susan has also been working with David Neal who has agreed to update the ACROSS app
that he designed a couple of years ago, for an honorarium of $500.00. This should also be
ready by Patriots Day, certainly by Bike Walk Bus Week in May. We discussed the fact that
upcoming routes can be added to digital maps and apps even if the physical signing is not
complete. People are used to using digital information now, so this will keep us moving for-
ward as we plan new routes.
Ongoing Business
:
Most members had a chance to walk the route presently called Route 7. All agreed that it
has some nice features, including the piece through Shaker Glen, which is somewhat remote
from much of the town. We discussed a change of the route which picks up another existing
trail, gets users off streets more, and shortens the route a bit. Bob, Eileen, and Peggy will
walk the new version, and will discuss location of posts and signs for the entire route. This
will be Route G.
Keith will contact Karen Mullins (Conservation), Aaron Henry (Planning) and the Engineering
Dept for any necessary permissions for Route G. Mike will be in charge of updating the
maps.
We will have about $500.00 in CPA funds left at the close of FY16. These funds roll back to
CPC. We can request more funds as needs arise.
A decision was made - no official vote taken - to hold off on making decisions about wayfind-
ing signage. Peggy and Keith talked to Elaine Doran of the Historical Society about access-
ing historic photos, which we might be able to incorporate into future interpretation of
ACROSS routes. The Worthen Collection at Cary Memorial Library has many digitized pho-
tos.
An Eagle Scout contact GCC about putting a bench along a route. Keith will forward to the
appropriate authority once he has more information.
