Meeting Minutes
April 14, 2015
Present: Lea Gardner Elkin, Chair, Charlotte Rodgers, HSD Director, Bonnie Tempas,
Bette Borgheani, Gail Rodgers, Norm Cohen, Selectman, Pam Joshe, Gail Fields,
Kristie Demirev, HSD
1. Minutes approved
2. Kristie Demirev provided a HSD update:
a. The Youth Services Council has 5 perspective candidates for the student
representative position.
b. the recent Parent Academy was a big success with 154 parents attending. The
anxiety workshop was the most heavily attended. Resources were distributed. The
SADD Club from LHS was present. They coordinated food sales and were also
succussful in their fundraising.
c. The education on Thinking not Drinking is focussing on host responsibility and is
being coordinated with the PTA President's Council.
3. Charlotte and Kristie gave other HSD updates and stats including information on:
a, statistics of HSD cases
b. recreation scholarships -7 in March
c. referral call - 20 -25
d. homelessness families - only 5 at this point
e. Mental Health First Aid - June 1 there will be a community conversationf.
f. Changes to the Recreation Department - will now be called Recreation and
Community Programming. Youth programming has moved to the Recreation
Department, and will be the Youth and Family Services Program. this will include a
team approach to not lose at risk community of youth. Focus will be on Wrokin with
Middle and High School youth.
4. Commity Center Update - There was an open house today. Much coordination
happening. Donations are still coming in. The goal of bringing young and old together.
There remains some governance issues that are being working out. The move in
Date is June 1
5. Bill Blout and two other members of the Youth at Risk Ad Hoc Committee attended to
discuss their findings. These included:
a.Coorination between town, school, and community is needed.
b. A school Resource Officer and treatment (? through the town) is missing.
c. The library is very active for youth programming
d. A goal is th increase communication through the town, stregthen prevention
programs, increase services for youth after school hours.
e. The Ad Hoc committee is looking at the coordination for the administrative level, ie.
selectmen to Superintentent.
f. The idea of a town website for education was discussed, and the need to open up to
the voices of kids.
g. Clearing house for information and publications for the town - a website that is
addressed to the students with the students help design it.
