Jessica Caverly presented a background on the new phonics program that Grades K, 1, and in the new year, Grade 2 will be implementing for all students. Her presentation encompassed the following information: What is Foundations? What are we doing with the students? Basic overview: Fits into framework of tiered systems and supports and RTI - General Tier 1 - In the classroom for all students - Tier 2 for small groups (targeted to student needs) - Tier 3 for small groups that need additional support, Foundations ties nicely with the Wilson program Supporting accuracy with reading words and spelling words (automaticity); Phonics & a look at how words work in English. Two main skills with phonics - we teach kids to take words apart (decode) and put words together (encoding) (handwriting) Two main types of words: 1) words that are phonetically regular & 2) high frequency words - irregular/trick Working to support orthographic mapping Questions: What is orthographic mapping? What grade levels are we using foundations and other programs to support decoding and encoding? Materials: Letter boards Handwriting boards Word collection journal Support in the classroom - environmental supports: - word walls - posters - Foundations has a family home support pack so the parents know what the students are interested in Activities - how do we help students access these skills - dictation skills warming up with sounds and letters - letter manipulation - letter formation (Verbal path) - make it fun - word play - Word Play - writing sentences grammatically correctly (capitalization, punctuation, etc.) Progress monitoring - unit assessments and determine if we want to pause and reteach or just a small group Working collaboratively well with other supportive programs like Heggerty Question: Sentence structure - when does that start? It starts in kindergarten with modeling and teacher-led examples, then in first grade continues with hearing the sentence, counting the words, building sentences with sentence frames (diagramming).
