As promoters of walking and biking in the Lexington community we welcome the benefits that this project will provide to the overall walking and biking experience in Lexington. The premise of the ACROSS Lexington project has been and continues to be that of identifying and marking pedestrian and bicycle corridors throughout Lexington linking the town’s open spaces. Repurposing the stumps of trees that had become public hazards along this existing green space corridor that connects to an existing ACROSS Lexington route is a wonderful solution, and fits perfectly with the Greenways Committee’s overall mission. The vision of public art providing not only an artistic but in this case an educational component will be a fitting addition to the wide range of public monuments to be found throughout Lexington. The vision behind this project will also be a welcome addition to encouraging the public to engage in passive outdoor recreational pursuits and hopefully serve as an incentive to explore more of Lexington’s bountiful natural resources. One of the over-arching goals of the Greenways Committee from day one has been to encourage the public to explore Lexington’s ample bounty of natural resources while leaving their car at home. The Transforming Trees into Art project touches all these bases while enriching the overall experience immeasurably. Our committee strongly urges the approval of this project. The drafting and submission of this letter of support was authorized by unanimous vote of the Greenways Corridor Committee at it’s meeting on November 3.
