The response of the Massachusetts Historical Commission East Lexington
to the local Commission' s proposal to nominate all or National
a portion of the East Lexington Historic District to Register
the National Register was discussed. MHC representative Nomination
Joe Orfant, after reviewing the area and attending the
November 3 slide, show on East Lexington declined to
approve the nomination. Instead, he recommended that the
East Lexington Railroad station, the Morell-Dana house and
the Brown-Butterfield house be nominated as individual
properties .
The local commisAion is hesitant to make these
separate nominations with. the exception of the railroad
station. It was felt that the area represents a. unique
collection of 1800-1875 buildings , with a high concentration.
of 1830 vernacular houses, which ought to be treated as a
whole . Therefore, the commission decided tip attempt a preview
of the district through personal contacts at the national
office to elicit an opinion on the suitability -of the 'district
for nomination.
Sara Chase will. write the nomination, Anne Grady
will direct further deed research on the area and Elizabeth
Reinhardt will organize the photographic presentation. . Much
of the balance of the meeting was spent discussing which
buildings ought to be included in the 'roposal T
