Present: Chairman Elizabeth Reinhardt, Anne Grady, Richard Morehouse, Donna Brown. Guests: Mr. Wilbur Jaquith from Historic Districts Com. The meeting was called to order at 7 A0 P.M. The Chairman announced the National meeting of Historic. Trust which will be held in Philadelphia, NATIONAL October 27-31. We will send for more information in anticipation of one MEETING or more of ours attending. Donna Brown was asked to contact the Comptrollers office to get an acc- ounting of how much the Commission has spent to date and report that ACCOUNTING amount to the Chairman. Mrs. Reinhardt announced that the Lexington Historical Commission has a Membership card in the. National Trust if anyone is interested in using MEMBERSHIP it. CARD The Commission has recieved the booklet put out by the Ipswich Historical Group entitled Something to Preserve. It will be circulated amoung the BOOKLET members. A discussion was held concerning the Bowman Tavern. The present owner is Mrs. Butaro but we have not been successful in reaching her to see if we can visit the inside. It is believed this building is dated 1767. William Diamond lived here. It is, believed that the building was taken down in BOWMAN 1860 and rebuilt about 1900. Talk was that it was once a gambling and TAVERN "House of Ill Repute". We will send a message to all local organizations in regard to their interest in forming an organization for Preservation. Perhaps some kind PRESERVATION if Heritage Trust Organization could be established if enough interest can be established. We considered the matter of accessing Historical properties. We should check with the local Board on this matter in order to be able to advise owners as to what if any difference improvements would make in their Accessment accessment. Mr. Morehouse will contact Mr. Irwin. THE LEXINGTON HISTORICAL COMMISSION Lexington, Massachusetts 02173 2. Mrs. Brown reported on the status of the East Lexington Railroad Station. The new owners being Mr. George Rowe and Mr. Dominic Deflice. They will be taking title to the property in July of this year. Mr. Rowe and Mr. EAST LEX. Deflice are aware of the significance of the building and our concern RAILROAD about it. They have a clause in their deed which stipulates they must STATION retain a waiting room area of approximately 10X20 and do plan to maintain the building. There is a posibili.ty they will rent some space there which would eliminate some of the vandalism problems. Ideas were discussed as to the Monument on hhe Battle Green. Mrs. Grady will see Mr. McSweeney about what has already been done to the marble MONUMENT piece and will also lookat the old slate which is in the Hancock Clarke House The Historic District Commission will hold a hearing on the Flag Pole on the common on April 22. The BiCentenial Commission will pay for a new pole in the same location provided the old stump can be removed. The Mass FLAG POLE Historical Commission will offer the services of their archaeologist. If the town is not using Federal funds they may proceed with the replacement as they see fit. It has been decided that the town will not look for the foundation of a Meeting House. We will have the Theatre Camera Shop send the bill for pictures directly HISTORIC to the Historic Districts Commission. Mrs. Reinhardt will talk with Mr. DISTRICTS Perry to see about getting an appropriation for this in the future. PICTURES Next meeting will include any townspeople that we find interested in preservation with the possibility of establishing some kind of Preservation PRESERVATION Group.
