Money is available from the following sources for Historic Preservation. Dept. of the Interior - National oark Service State Historic oreaorvmtion - Elizabeth Amadon Exec. Director (Ma. Hist. Comm.) Mr. Snell is the Agent Administrator of the Grants Program. Mr. Tabor is the Staff Architect. Up to 50% of the Actual cost of the project can be funded. Request must be doc- umented (the more you ask for the more you get) 1. Make out application - sent this ONLY - (don't send more than is asked for) Make sure you have the right Congressional District. The application comes with a sample and guide. Applications are due in Lexington by April 9th and should be submitted to the local Historical Commission. The Massachusetts Historical Commission completes the Federal application (Vol. 3) and will send to Washington after submitting to all local agencies as required. The application goes next to Congress, which acts and determines the amount of althocation. The State will notify the applicant in December if and/or how much money will be allocated for your project. Then definite plsnd and specifications must be sub- mitted. Grants are given only for work to be done and not for work already done. See Grants Manual for Specific Instructions. Once an allocation is made the plans and opouo" are sent to Washington by the State Historical Commission. When the project is complete a report must be sent to the State Historical Commission. 2. To Be Eligible: Property must be listed in the National Register. (Individually or as a District) If Grant is made the party must agree to some preservation restrictions. Owners and survivors agree to maintain the property for some ( ) number of years. See Guide. Kinds of Grants Mode: In FY 1976 $827,000 to 120 recipients (FY is October 1 to Sept^30) Boston - State House - Doric Dames $20*000 to restore Senate reception room. Pittef1eld - Berkshire County Hist. Soc. - To acquire the H. Melvill Home $32,000" Stockbridge - Berkshire Hist. Society - Renovation of Citizens Hall. Saugus - Soc. for pres^ of Antiq. - New roof on one portion of Boardman House. Chicopee - Edward Belamy Mansion restoration Woburn - Baldwin Mansion restoration - and assisting in land acquisition around it for the protection against development. Arlington - Old Sohmomb Mill - restoration and preservation of machinery (last in the country to make oval frames) Cambricge - First Parish Church restoration $22,000° Pelham - Historical Commission - Painting the Town Hall , Painting the Church and shoring up the basement. Buckland - Grismald House - The original Mary Lyons House - restoration of the original ballroom. (this is a private residence and owners were required to have open to the public for 12 days per year. ) The Maas. Historical Comm. is also interested in Archaeological projects. Masonary preservations (do not approve of sandblasting or silicone treatment) Color - restored as to historical originality, not whatever you like. Reroofing Electrical and Mechanical systems - should be well thought out. Consideration should be given to appearance and impact of exit signs and emergency lighting. When Project is accepted: Itemized cost estimate Measured Drawings - when needed Specifications - materials 3 8%l0 glossy pictures of the property Historical Brief Name of local supervisor (can be the homeowner) personel, consurtants, contractor Statement of matching share (source) Slides were shown of various projects that have recieved funds. A short question period followed. It was announced that the next Preoervation Workshop will be April 3 in Newburyport. Local Commissions should consider: State is revising and printing guide lines. New Imaginative Projects. Relativity of the building (how important it is and its location) How does a building relate with other Government Funding 9:10 P.M. Business Session Four reservations have been made by the Chairman for the Preservation Workshop in Newburyport on April 3rd. National Historic Preservation Week is may 9-l5 Society for Arch. Historians Annual Meeting May 19~24^ It was voted to send AnrmCrady and request funds for transportation, Registration fee and Hotel/meals. 3. The Hi.atbric Districts Commission wants a meeting re: Flag Pole on the Battle Green Marker on the Battle Green. Mrs. Reinhardt will try to have them come to our next regular meeting. oreservotion Week Mrs. Grady and Mrs. Reinhardt with Mr. Morehouse will make an appointment to see Mrs. Butaro, owner of the Bowman Tavern, to see the inside and determine if the structure is in good enough condition to warent a work party to paint the exterior as our project during Preservation Week. Mrs. Brown will contact Mr. George Rowe and Mr. Dominic DeFlice to inquire as to their plans for the preservation of the East Lexington Railroad Depot.
