September 6,2007
Selectmen's Meeting Room
Meeting Time: 7:45 am
In attendance: Fernando Quezada, Marian Cohen, Margaret Coppe, Ann Redmon,
George Burnell, Candy McLaughlin, Matt Courchene
Meeting Began: 7:50 am
The minutes from the previous 2020 meeting (7/26)were approved. The group briefly
discussed the topics that were discussed at the last meeting.
The Committee mentioned that any members who are due to renew their membership
must do so in a timely process.
Scoping Group Information: The committee reviewed the Scoping Group Information
document. Candy talked with the Town Manager about the formation of a scoping group
being pushed back until spring of 2008. After a brief discussion, the group thought it
wasn't a good idea to push the scoping group timeframe back too far. The point of the
scoping group is to determine what work needs to be accomplished and the 2020
members want to see that group complete their work this fall. There was a discussion on
whether or not the December 1st deadline for the scoping group to reach their conclusions
should remain in place; the group agreed the date should remain.
Fernando brought up the issue of including non-citizens within the demographics of the
scoping group's findings. The committee debated this issue and determined both
voters/non-voters; citizens/non-citizens should be included within the demographics.
The 2020 Committee discussed the formation of the scoping group. It was announced
that Yukari Scott and Peter Lee have signed up to join the scoping group. Eventually
2020 Vision is looking for six individuals to serve in the group. The Committee
discussed some of the characteristics they would like to see within the appointed scoping
group. The importance of diversity within the group was stressed as was appointing
members who will effectively represent the various segments of Lexington's population.
There was a suggestion that someone from the League of Women should be invited to
join the group. Committee members thought it would be valuable to look for possible
candidates within the library & business communities, and from the senior population.
The goal of the Committee is to have the scoping group organized in time for them to
hold their first meeting in September. Marian Cohen will start out as the coordinator of
the scoping group until a chairperson has been named. The 2020 Committee will send
out an email to individuals within Lexington who may be a good fit for the scoping
group. A meeting date will be included within the invitation letter. The individuals who
will receive a letter must be determined in the next few days to provide enough time to
get a response in time for a September meeting.
Economic Development Task Force update: The Committee briefly spoke about Shire
moving to Lexington and how it is remains a major issue within Lexington.
Climate Committee: The 2020 Committee discussed the progress of the newly formed
ad hoc Climate Action Plan Committee. The group has met once and has broken into two
sub-groups. One of the groups is the "software group"that will look over the ICLEI
software and recommend how to gather and track data on carbon levels within Lexington.
The group set October 2°d as the next 2020 Committee meeting. There was some
discussion about what morning works best for committee members. The group agreed
that Tuesday might be the most accommodating day for all of the members.
Meeting Ended: 8:34 am
