PROCLAMATION ; �
Whereas: Winston Emery "Pat" Flynn was born in 1924 in West Lebanon, Vermont and entered
military service with the US Army at the age of 18 in March af 1943 in Massachusetts; and
Whereas: Pat went on to serve continuously on the front lines until 1945 during which time he made
amphibious landings at Anzio Beachhead, Italy and St. Maxine Beachhead, France. He was
buried alive when a direct shell hit his foxhole at Anzia killing his fo�chole mate. He was
hospitalized and returned to the front within a week; and
Whereas: in 195Q, Pat saw combat in Karea, leading over 80 consecutive patrols behind enemy lines.
Wounded, he spent three days behind enemy Iines in a faxhole, when his Battalion was
overrun by the enemy. In 1951 Pat received a Battlefield Commission to 2°a Lieutenant for
outstanding combat while under fire and in 1952,Pat became an original member of the 14`h
Special Forces Group Airbc�rne at Bad To1z, Germany when he was persanally recruited by
Colanel Aaron Bank;and
Whereas: during the cold war Pat went on to organize and cammand a Special Forces A Team;and
Whereas: in 1962, Pat joined Company C, 5"' 5pecial Forces Group, Airborne at Fart Bragg, Narth
Carolina. Pat served as leader af a B Team controlling 7 A teams of Green Berets operating
in the Delta in Vietnam and in Octaber af 1463,Pat sustained catastrophic and career ending
injuries during a cambat jump in Vietnam; and
Whereas: during his military tenure Pat earned the following awards and decarations: Bronze Star
Medal; Purple Heart with three Bronze Oak Clusters; Army Commendatian Medal; Army
. Gaod Canduct Medal with Bronze Clasp and Four Loops;Eurapean-African-Middle Eastern.
Campaign Medal with Arrowhead device and ane Silver Service Star;VVarld War II Victary
Medal;Army 4ccupation Medal with Germany Clasp;National Defense Service Medal with
one Branze Star; Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars; Armed Forces
Expeditionary Medal;Presidential Unit Citatian;Cornbat Infantryman Badge with two Stars;
Master Parachutist Badge; E�ert Badge with Rifle bar; Marksman Badge with Pistol and
Carbine bars; Special Forces Tab; Honorable Service Lapel Button-Wortd War II; United
IVations Service Medal; Republic of Korea-Korean War Service Medal; Republic of Korea
Presidential Unit Citatian; Republic of�ietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm
device; and
Whereas: in August af 2021,Pat was honored at the American Heritage Museum when he received the
French Legion of Honar medal far his participation in the liberation of France during Warld
War II; and
�liereas: far over 45 years,Pat and his wife Edith have made their hame in Lexingtan,Massachusetts
where Pat cQntinuing his civic minded leadership for the benefrt af the Tawn and its residents
including serving over 15 years on the Town Celebrations Committee including four as
Chairman and ariginating with the approval of the Town's Selectmen, Lexington's
flutstanding Yauth Award Program.Pat served as the Town's first Veterans Services Officer,
organized the annual Veterans Breakfast for many years and was a co-founder of the
Lexington Veterans Association. Pat was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Ratary
Foundation af Rotary International, a life member af the Lexington Minute Men Company
and was the 2006 recipient af the Lexingtan Lions Club White Tricarn Hat. Of all the honars
Pat received, it is his White Tricorne Hat and Triple Combat Infantry Badge he is said ta
have valued the most.
NOW, THEREFORE, WE THE SE�ECT BDARD of the Town 4f Lexington, Massachusetts, hereby
recognize and honor posthumously
Winstan E. "Pat"Flynn
and name Monday, October 3, 2022 as Winston E. "Pat" Flynn Day in the Town af Le�ngton and
encourage residents of all ages to participate in giving back to the Town of Lexington and the Cauntry
as Pat did so well.
