HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-09-08-SRTS-min \i) ' ) Zo Bridge SRTS minutes Sept 8 Police: Craig Weeks reported that the police department's first response was that they were unable to help, that it is the domain of the school dept. He will continue to pursue the issue—if they are unwilling to work with us, they may at least have resources such as a list of safe walking tips. Crossing Guards: Craig is still waiting on a response from School Dept. Crosswalks on Marrett: At Craig's urging, Wayne Brooks of DPW agreed to repaint the crosswalks on 2A while his crews were out last week—thank you! (the state should do them). Regular walkers from Woodhaven neighborhood felt that an additional crosswalk on 2A across from the res would be helpful. To avoid crossing at Spring st. intersection, walkers on east side of Spring (or Bridge st) can head east on 2A and use crosswalk at Downing, others on west side of Spring can head west on 2A and cross at the old res parking lot (a crosswalk here would also be used by Tufts st area) Hopes for more pedestrian friendly intersection at Spring in the future were expressed. Craig is also looking into markers to place in crosswalks similar to those in the center of town. Safe walking: Walk leaders and kids need to be informed about safe walking habits before kickoff week (Tracey will check back with Barbara Manfredi re: assembly). Elise Rowley will look into safety tip sheets, Myra Morgan and Atheane Waite will be working on Safety Day of kickoff week and will coordinate with other efforts. Brightly colored squares of fabric could be given out to walk leaders to increase visibility and use as flag at busy crossings. Homemade signs (esp. during kickoff week) would increase awareness of motorists. Routes: Elise Rowley will continue to work on this. Good response at PTA breakfast. During first few week of school, walkers are urged to talk it up, connect with neighbors, and test out possible routes in preparation for kickoff week. Various degrees of concern were expressed regarding a sex offender living on Winston St. Suggestion: Houses could have signs in window "Safe Haven" —if a kid needs anything on their way to school. (Phase 2 of SRTS) Also suggested— a marker of some sort (flyer? Ribbon? Balloon?) on mailboxes of participants along route—could be part of Neighbor Day of kickoff week. Neighborhood walk leaders urged to establish a way of communicating with other folks on their route (remind them to wear yellow on safety day, etc.) Drop-off spots for folks living far/set times for walking buses—to consider in Phase 2 Curriculum tie-in: Barbara Manfredi will put together a task force of teachers. Jill Hai work on this. Tracey has some materials (Phase 2) Kickoff week Table at playground receiving kids —urge kids to arrive a bit early Get different colored ribbon each day Kids sign in—include address so we can track participants (helpful to push for future crosswalks, guards, sidewalks etc) In school hallway—kids make tally marks if they walk, carpooled etc (Jill Hai will do) Daily tally could be announced over PA Buttons given out on last day—cost about$100 for 500. Include bus folks — give ribbons as they arrive? Include carpoolers—tie ribbon on antennae of those who carpool COORDINATORS Monday—Safety Myra Morgan, Atheane Waite Tuesday—Environment Tanya Morrissett,Elizabeth Posner Wenesday—Neighbors Sue Wilner, Chris Maeda, Janice DiRamio Thursday - Health—Jill Hai, Laura Kerper Friday—Bridge walks Bridge Rocks—Tracey Herbert, Mary Ellen Goodwin PR: Lisa Weiler is contacting local papers, Bridge to Home and Town Sidewalk committee website with press releases.
