Avis Foster invites you to bring your easel, paint box, hat, ,.• a sandwich and drink, and accompany her for short trips to neighboring towns to paint and have fun in the sun and shade. Avis will offer instruction in watercolors, acrylic, or oils. Attend any and/or all of the classes. Free. • International Affairs. Tuesdays, 2:00 pm-3:30 pm. International,Political, Economic, and Global Policies Discussion Group. Dr.Naeem Rathore will explore conflicts around the world and US participation; cooperative efforts/the UN; US and world economies;jobs; the role of education; election 2004. Paul Lewis will continue his June presentation of spam and viruses and how to protect your computer. • Poets Live Again. Tuesdays, September 7- October 26, 10:00 am-12:00 pm. Evelyn Giteck will be conducting a lively discussion focusing on poet Franz Wright, who has embarked on a creative journey in poetry depicting his life. He is the winner of numerous awards, including this year's Pulitzer Prize, two National Endowment for the Arts grants, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and many other honors. Join us for a lively discussion and study of this contemporary poet and his work. $30 • Advanced Quilting. Thursdays, September 9-October 28,9:00 am. Students will continue to explore advanced machine piecing techniques. We will work on a sampler quilt and each week will involve a demonstration of a different quilt block design. Beginners, come learn the basics of quilting, including both hand and machine techniques. Monday, September 13,9:00 am-12:00 pm. Dr. Joseph Grimbel, Podiatrist, will be holding a foot health screening at the senior center. Dr. Grimbel will conduct individual foot examinations and answer any of your questions at that time. He will also provide information and brochures. There will be no advanced sign-up. Appointments will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. • Spirituality. Monday, September 13, 1:30 pm. The spirituality group will complete its lightened summer schedule with a single meeting in September. In October we will revert to the normal yearly schedule of second and fourth Mondays at 1:30. We continue using Scott Peck's excellent book, "The Road Less Travelled," as we explore the issues of love and spirituality. All are welcome. • Creative Crafts! Monday, September 27, 10:15 am. With Gerry M. Weisenberg. Session topic will be"Women Artists of the High Renaissance." Call the Senior Center at 781-861-0194 to make an appointment. Please let us know if you can't make your appointment. • FISH(Friendly Independent Sympathetic Help) is a high-regarded private volunteer organization founded in 1972 that offers people free rides to medical appointments. FISH's 120 volunteers provide some 150 round trips per month. Your help is needed. If you can use a phone, drive a car and can volunteer one day a month, you can play a pivotal role in maintaining this essential service. To volunteer call 781-862-0375. • Bring your items to the Fix-It-Shop!If you have looked for a place to get those small items repaired, look no more-- the Elmer Bull Fix-It-Shop is the place for you. Open for business every Thursday from 9:00 am to noon. Drop off and pick up during these times only. Cost? Labor free -repair parts at cost. Donations however are accepted. • Friend-to-Friend Program is currently seeking volunteers who are interested in being a part of a new Steenng Committee. As part of the vital services we offer Lexington seniors,this co ttee will be responsible for recruitment of volunteers and coordination of their efforts. The Friend-to-Friend Program helps to relieve the isolation of homebound elders in Lexington. The homebound elder is paired with a volunteer who offers friendly visits, and/or assistance with grocery shopping and errands. Tuesdays, September 14, 21,28, and October 5 from 1:30 pm-3:30 pm at the Acton Council on Aging. Developed for early-stage people with memory disorders, this four-part series explores ways in which symptoms can be managed and abilities maintained longer. These sessions combine education and support to enhance understanding of dementia and to show how early stage persons can participate in decisions affecting their lives. The course runs for two hours per session for four consecutive weeks and is free of charge but has limited enrollment. The event will be kicked off with a Friday night jazz concert at Clarke Middle School from 7:30 pm-9:30 pm.
