Re: 31 Massachusetts Ave.
Car Wash
At its regular meeting on April 3, 2007, the DAC reviewed (for a third time) a site plan for a new car
wash facility at 31 Massachusetts Ave. The redesign has taken into account previous DAC concerns
with respect to the overall intensity of use of this site. In addition to the site plan, building elevations
and signage were presented for review. The building scale, materials and signage all appear to be
appropriate to the surrounding context.
One area that remains a concern is the extremely wide curb cut (3+ lanes). While we understand the
functional aspects of the proposed design, it's important to maintain a definition between the site and
public way (the sidewalk). We remain concerned, for safety reasons, about the reliance of portions of
the sidewalk, nearest the vacuum equipment, being used for transverse traffic circulation within the site.
At a minimum, a granite curb with paving should be introduced in this location to clarify vehicle and
pedestrian paths.
With the above-mentioned comments, the DAC recommends this project be approved.
Respectfully submitted,
Colin P. Smith AIA, Chairman
