2006 Minuteman Cane Award Committee Report
Monday, April 3, 2006
2 PM in Selectmen Meeting Room
Looking back, the committee met for the first time this year on Monday, February 6 at 2
PM in the Selectmen Meeting Room. Present were Dot Boggia, Sheldon Spector, Marie
Hill, Larry Whipple and Beverly Kelley. Absent were Don Graham, David Williams,
Dick Michelson and Lodia Parilla.
Dot announced the date for the party this year and it will be Wednesday, May 3 at 2 PM
at the Senior Center. Members of the committee will help. We discussed adding more
members but decided to keep it at 11 for now, which includes the two honorary members,
Neil Cronin and Bill Wildes. Dot also asked Larry if he is still willing to do the
engraving on the cane and he said “Yes.” David will do the proclamation. It was also
announced that the first recipient of the Minuteman Cane was Edith Cheever and that she
had recently passed away. Dot read a letter from Edith’s family. There will be a
memorial service at Pilgrim Church at a later date.
Today’s meeting was held as scheduled. Members present were Dot Boggia, Don
Graham, Marie Hill, Beverly Kelley, Sheldon Spector, Larry Whipple and David
Williams. Absent were Dick Michelson and Lodia Parilla.
The meeting started at 2:05. We first discussed notifying Bill Wildes that since he has
moved from Lexington we are going to pursue finding someone to sit on the committee
in his place. He has been a wonderful member of the committee for many years and we
thank him for his service. Dot will contact Bill. Since Bill was the committee’s member
from the Lexington Clergy, Dot will talk to Carl Valente, the Town Manager, about
finding a replacement from the Clergy Association.
Larry will look into engraving the cane and David will write the proclamation.
David brought up the age issue for nominees. It began as 80 and then a few years ago it
was changed to 75. David made a motion to change it back to 80. We had a discussion
and then voted to change it back to 80. So, beginning in 2007, a nominee has to be at
least 80 to be considered for the cane.
There were six nominees this year. We discussed each in alphabetical order. The
nominees were Margery Battin, Julian Bussgang, Dan Fenn, Jr., Catherine Rego, Shirley
Stolz and Jackie Ward. After much discussion, we took a private vote and the top vote-
getter was Shirley Stolz. Jackie Ward came in second and Dan Fenn was third. David
and Sheldon volunteered to visit Shirley next week and tell her.
The party for Shirley and all the former recipients will be on Wednesday, May 3 at 2 PM
at the Senior Center.
