FROM THE HEALTH CORNER: Chicken Soup Charlotte Rodgers, RN Natural immunity is your body's own defense system - help- ing to protect you from viruses and other diseases. Laboratory studies have shown that chicken soup suppresses inflammation, which causes many cold symptoms. Grandma was on to some- thing when she made you chicken soup! Here are some other common foods that may also boost immunity: • Orange juice or grapefruit contain lots of vitamin C • Whole grain cereals or breads contain vitamins and minerals, especially zinc and vitamin E, which help keep your immune system healthy • Black tea (real tea leaves) contains substances that improve the action of tiny hair -like cells in your nasal passages that in turn help them to expel germs • Yogurt contains beneficial bacteria, especially useful for diges- tion • Chicken soup especially when made with onions, garlic, pars- nips and carrots, reduces the inflammation response during a cold and helps to relieve congestion • Bitter greens, such as arugula and watercress, have antiviral effects and may reduce chest congestion • Tomato sauce and garlic, two potent disease - fighting foods that may contribute to heart health and boost your immune system • Ginger (try a ginger tea) is known to fight viruses and may help to suppress coughing If you have questions about whether or not you should add a food to your diet, check with your doctor.
