Monday, November 10, 2008 at I p.m. Florence DelSanto, Executive Director of LexMedia, will be at the Lexington Senior Center to moderate a discussion about the switch to digital TV, taking place on February 17, 2009. If you have cable or satellite TV, you will not need to make a change - your TV will work perfectly. If you do not have cable (if you use an antenna or "rabbit ears ") you will need to get a converter box. This presentation will explain the switch, and tell you how you can get coupons worth $40.00 each that can be used purchase converter boxes for two TV's. Adrienne will present information on a variety of programs and organizations that accept knitting donations, such as hats for the homeless, baby blankets for hospitals and orphanages, and afghans for Afghans. Learn about these great charity opportunities and brush up on your knitting skills. Some basic knitting techniques will be introduced for beginners. Lexington Veterans Association – Tuesday, November 10, 2008 at 1:15 p.m. at Cary Memorial Library "Katrina, What Happened in New Orleans." Cranston Rogers, nationally renowned professional engineer, known for his contributions in designing transportation projects that pose unusual challenges, is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was called upon by the Army Corps of Engineers to assist in assessing the aftermath of Katrina. He will present an insider's look into what happened there. Refreshments. Seasonal flu is caused by influenza viruses that infect people every year. In New England, flu season usually begins in December and lasts until April. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each fall. October or November is the best time to get vaccinated, but you can still get vaccinated in December and later. The most common flu symptoms are: • Sudden onset of fever • Tiredness or weakness • Body Aches i • Dry Cough The Town of Lexington will be offering FREE flu vaccinations on Saturday November 1, at Cary Memorial Hall from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. ALL Lexington residents over the age of 4 years are encouraged to be vaccinated this year. Medicare will reimburse the Town of Lexington for flu shots, so we ask that you bring your Medicare card to the flu clinic. You may also get your flu shot from your primary care provider. If you need a flu shot in your home because you are homebound, please call the Public Health Nurse at 781- 862 -0500 x 281. SUPPORTIVE DAY PROGRAM — The Supportive Day Program will have informational tours of the facility available on the first and third Wednesday of each month, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Call for directions and come visit our program which provides a warm, home -like, day setting for seniors who are having difficulty living independently. Meals, transportation and a full day of interesting activities are provided. Social connections and a sense of community are developed as we explore mentally challenging and creative endeavors throughout the day. NOVEMBER 2008 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER NEWS 9 Friends of the Council on Aging Donations Request Form Who are we? The FCOA as we are known maintains the monetary donations raised through both contributions and fundraising activities on behalf of the Lexington Council on Aging to support the Senior Center. What are the funds used for? Funds are used to support programs and activities, help purchase equipment and services, and to make improvements at the Lexington Senior Center. What are some examples? Many seniors attend and enjoy music and exercise programs as well as use the exercise equipment that we provide. How can you help? Did you know that you could make a tax deductible donation to the FCOA? We area 501(c) 3 and are anon -profit organization. Please mail donations to: 1475 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA 02420. SENIOR HEALTH OUTREACH PROGRAM The Senior Health Outreach Program is a service provided by the Town of Lexington to seniors that are homebound and unable to easily access health screenings. The income guidelines for assistance are: household ofone $20,800 and household oftwo $28,000. Appointments can be scheduled for new clients by calling the Social Services Department at (781) 861 -0194. Fuel assistance appointments will occur on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate walk -ins, so please be sure to schedule an appointment. Special accommodations are available to accommodate persons who are homebound or have other extenuating circumstances. Water /Sewer Discount Program It is the policy of the Town of Lexington to outreach and identify residents who are in need of financial assistance to pay their water and sewer bills. In order to qualify for relief under the Water and Sewer Discount Program, a resident must be a property owner and meet the financial guidelines (for Fuel Assistance) under the Federal Low - Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Residents must meet with a staff member of the Social Services Department and complete a Town of Lexington Financial Needs Assessment Form. Please call 781- 861 -0194 for an appointment. Money Management Program: Assistance with Monthly Bill Paying Coping with bills and the mechanics of monthly bill paying can be overwhelming. Could you or someone you know use help keeping up with your monthly bills? The Money Management Program (co- sponsored by AARP, EOEA, and Mass Home Care) can provide a volunteer to assist with bill paying including: making a budget, sorting bills, writing checks (for YOU to sign), and reconciling checkbooks. FY09 Senior Service Program The Senior Service Program asks participating taxpayers to work for the municipality in exchange for a reduction in their tax bill. Positions vary, the hours are flexible and are available at different sites including: the Schools, Cary Memorial Library, Town Hall, the Senior Center, Police Department, etc. ♦ Applications are available through the Senior Services Department, and will be accepted for review on a rolling basis. ♦ Applicants must be 60 years of age or older and own property in Lexington that serves as their principle residence. ♦ Gross income (including Social Security income) must not exceed $46,300 for single taxpayer or $52,950 for a couple. ♦ The maximum credit a single taxpayer may earn is $935.00 including all withholdings per fiscal year. ♦ Two people per household may participate in the program, earning a maximum of $1,190.00. The Parkinson's Disease support group will meet the 4th Monday of each month at 1 p.m. at the Senior Center in the Muzzey Room. Bereavement &Friendship Group – Meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. All are welcome, and no registration is necessary. 1 -2:30 pm. On Wednesdays and Fridays the group is led by experienced volunteers. This workout focuses on both upper and lower body muscle strengthening, using free weights and bands. Donations are welcome. • Kripalu Yoga with Don Weikert – Kripalu yoga presents an opportunity to compassionately be with your body. You simply allow the instruction of the teacher within. We meet without judgment or exception. No previous yoga experience is necessary. Through guided centering, breathing, warm -ups, postures and relaxation, you become present to your own fullness. Prostate Cancer Group – This group is for men who currently have prostate cancer or survivors who wish to share the knowledge they have gained with others. Meets 3rd Wednesday of each month, 1 - 2:30 pm. Caregivers Group – Group meets 1 st and 3rd Thursday of each month, 1 –2:30 pm. A support group for caregivers of individuals with memory impairment.
