1 Meeting October 3, 1940 . - 'Messrs . Steeves, Burnham, Cann, Emery, Spencer and Miss Ready were present . The 1940 Statutory Exemption Applications received from the 4 following persons were considered and the Board voted to grant the following abatements; Mrs. Martha J. Moore , 11 Drew Avenue , $2000. exemption, ✓ $64.40 abated under Clause 18. Mrs. Moore is 74 years of age and Mr. Moore is 80 years old. Mrs. Mary Spellman, 24 Shirley Street , $2000. exemption, $64.40 abated under Clause 17 , Chap . 59 , Sec . 5. G.L . Mrs. Annie Sullivan, 22 Cottage Street, $2000. exemption, , $64.40 abated under Clause 17 , Chap`. 59 , Sec. 5. G.L. , Mrs. Carmella Moretti, 80 Bow Street, $2000. exemption, ' $64.40 abated under Clause 17 , Chap . 59 , Sec. 5. G.L. ��, The Board was told that Mrs. Ruth M. Haskell , a widowpof k ' 4 Brandon Street came in after she received her abatement slip `t amounting to $64.40 voted at the last meeting and granted under Clause 17 . In past years the total real estate tax on the Haskell K " home has been abated under Clause 18. Agreement some years ago that the Assessors wouldabate the tax while the Haskells lived in the house;, by doing so the ` Mortgagee ( O' Connell.-Shannon) would. not .;a foreclose and put this family out of their home . ** (see other side ) January 1, 1939 , Anna Wallace was assessed for land and a camp 4 ,at 113 .Burlington Street , and later in the year Mr. James Wallace , Sr. 1 , ,,at Arlington, claimed to be the owner so he was assess, i t' n the 1939 Dezember Omitted Assessments for the land and camp and paid the bill. i' . The Board at this meeting voted to abate the illegal tax of $21 .30 ;balled to Anna Wallace . rMrs. Florence G. Tilton of 11 Harrington Road asked the Assessors for a re-valuation of her property for 1940 and in March, the Board viewed the property and voted to make the 1940 assessment of 818,490. J , ,instead of $21,130. Mrs. Tilton was notified by letter of the new V assessment. Through someover-sight the office cards were not changed . ' to the new assessment and the 1940 valuation was written as 521,130 g,' ,: instead of $18,490. The Board at this meeting voted to grant Mrs. ` , ' Tilton an abatement of 885 .01 on her 1940 real estate tax bill. t , Valuation reduction amounting to $2640. Mrs. Hattie M. Jones of 166 Lowell Street, filed a Statutory . Exemption Form, Clause 18 as, requested at the September 19th meeting }T. ;and the abatement slips were signed at this meeting . Twa lists of Motor Vehicle Excise Tax Abatements abated so far in October were signedby the Board at this meeting. One department bill was approved and signed for payment . Emma Hadley, widow, 7 Fern Street $96.60 Clause 18 Sec. 5. • The Statutory Exemption form ,( Clause 18) received from Mrs. Anna Goloboy, widow, of 39 Sylvia Street was examined by the Board and as she has no mortgage on her real estate assessed for $4150 . the Board voted that no exemption or abatement be granted. A Statutory Exemption form signed by Mrs. Alice (Hugh) Koton of 12 Logan. Street, Roxbury, Mass. for exemption under Clause 22 on property located at 26 Bedford Street, was examined by. the Board and they voted that no exemption be allowed on the 1940 real estate tax bill. of Bridget A. Winn and Alice Koton. The Statutory Exemption form received from Mrs . Louise T. Bowman, widow, of 32 Lincoln Street, was examined but because of her equity in the property the Board voted that no -exemption be allowed under Clause 17. The Board did say that they would view' her property and see if it is over assessed . • Letter' received from Elizabeth J. Dunn, widow, of 282 Massachusetts Avenue was read also the Statutory Exemption Form Clause 17 that she filed was examined and because her equity was away over. $2000. the. Board voted that no exemption be allowed on her 1940 real estate tax. However, they will look over her property in the near future and see if the parcel is over assessed. Letter dated September 27th, from Mrs. Evelyn M. McVetty, widow of a World War Veteran, was read and the Board discussed her case . It was suggested that she be asked to come before.the Board and tell them more facts about her circumstances. Letter dated September 27th, from C . A. Cleveland in regard to the assessment on the property located at 20 Waltham Street was read . The assessment was discussed but the members of the Board were not of the opinion that they had agreed to an assessment of $12,000. on the property • after the alterations were made. The Board agreed to look the property over and talk with Mr. Cleveland in the near future about the •matter. The Board was informed of the letter received from. Mr. Roger W. Brown of 26 Green Street, Cambridge, and of his 1940 personal abatement applic ation and Form of List . The letter was read to the Board and they voted that no action be taken on the abatement request because the envelope containing' the three papers was not received at this office until Wednesd99 A.M. October 2, 1940 . ** The Assessors after hearing more about Mrs. Haskell' s circumstances from Mr. Spencer voted at this meeting to abate the balance of her 1940 real estate' tax under Clause 18. • Abatement of 627. 37 voted at this meeting. j � • The Board was informed that a 1940 real estate abatement ,, application signed by John S. Sullivan of 5 Butler Avenue was µtirecei..ved- Wednesday morning, October 2, 1940. The Bdard voted to - - take no action on this application because it was received after the limit allowed by law. The Assessors considered the written request of Mr. Caouette, agent � for Mrs. Lulu Blake , in his letter dated Oct. 1st, 1940, and the Board voted to grant Mrs. Blake the same consideration on her 1940 Castle Estate tax bill as they did in 1939. The tax on all building valuation over 45,000 to be abated. Buildings assessed for 423,500 -15,000 48,500 Abate on this amount 1940 tax bill being for. 41143.10 273.70 abated on 1940 tax bill. The 1940 real estate abatement application received from The Prudential Insurance Co. of America on their property located at 31 Slocum Road was considered by the Assessors and they voted at this meeting to give the samE consideration on this abatement application as they did in 1939; granting the applicant an abatement on 42000 valuation but not reducing the present assessment 414,330. The Board agreed to look at all the other real estate parcels that applications had been filed on for abatements on their 1940 real estate taxes. The above mentioned seven (7) applicants were notified by being sent the State Approved Form #135 dated Oct. 3, 1940 informing them of the decision of the Assessors on the applications filed by the applicants for abatements on their 1940 real estate tax bills.
