Review of presentation slides
• No changes since last viewing
• Recommendation to put in quotes from LPS social studies, etc.
Minutes for April 28 were approved with small changes, unanimously, as motioned by Mark
and seconded by Anne. May 5, 2022 minutes were approved unanimously, as motioned by
Melinda and seconded by Anne.
Melinda volunteered to confirm that Carolyn did not want to give the final presentation, and
second to that take on the presentation given how closely they have worked together.
Jeff asked who would attend the meeting if it were live (Jeff to confirm if online or onsite
meeting). Yes from Cristina, Jeff, Melinda, Les, Anne, Jackie.
Review of final report and presentation materials
Jeff presented his work on summarizing feasibility topics. Some committee members felt that
documents that bullet points were pulled from need to be reviewed separately if included as
an appendix.
Janet noted that the comment of "history not presented elsewhere" meant that if (for
example) slavery was presented elsewere that it could not be found at the Stone Building,
and also that the Old Schwab Mill used office space in such a way that might be explored as
1
a model for the Stone Building (with a response that it will need to be consistent with the
deed with approval of the Trustees/Town).
The committee discussed the slide noting "best" and "alternate" cases of models for financial
feasibility. This slide was created to delineate some of the responsibilities involved in building
management. In the end it was decided that these should be an appendix noting "2 options"
rather than "best" cases. For example, we have talked all along as a tenant being the one
entity to provide staffing, cleaning, utilities, but perhaps this entity is just someone residing in
the building to provide oversight to major issues like a broken window or burst pipe. In this
case they would not be the entity doing programming.. Likewise, the Town's Community
Center might have spillover activities that could be part of the building's programming.
The Best Case slide overviewed a scenario of a non-profit that would both manage the
restoration and then run the building and its programming (with the premise that if a
nonprofit could bid the restoration work, that it would result in lower restoration costs). The
difficulty in recommending one best solution was identified as not having a definitive fit for a
nonprofit at this point in time, nor an understanding of the possible roles the Town and
Trustees would play going forward ... leaving this discussion needing further exploration.
Mark volunteered to organize some letters of support to be in the report's appendices, and
reviewed a draft email to send out to individuals on our mailing list (deadline for replies, this
Sunday).
The ell was discussed as it related to renovation work (maintaining the existing interior
structure), with the outcome being to focus on the ultimate goal of accessibility, rather than
the history of the ell. Jeff stated that the 'Ell' was an essential part of the original structure,
as it provided the kitchen and bedrooms for those who maintained or lived in rooms of the
Larger structure. He noted that the Ell would provide the key accessibility feature - 2nd
means of egress that allows full occupancy of the lyceum, as well as space for accessible
Lavatories and the required elevator/lift. He noted that any destruction of portions of the
Lyceum structure would drastically reduce the building's usable area and result in destruction
of the essential timber framing.
Adjournment was made at 9:38, as motioned by Anne, seconded by Melinda and
unanimously approved.
