MEETING, DECEMBER 15, 1939
Messrs Steeves,Cann,Burnham,Emery,Shanahan,Spencer and Miss Ready.
Commitment of Water Liens amounting to $594.28 was signed by the
Board.

The Board worked on the 1940 department budget; Estimate for ex-
penses 4510 - Personal Services $5528 plus that amount to be spent for
Assistant Assessors.
The matter of requesting additional money for other clerical help ,
for 1940 was discussed and the Board felt that this department should
have another full time office clerk on account of the office duties grow
ing so much each year. Impossible to keep all the office cards up to
date, answer all the telephone calls and do the regular work. ;j
n motion of Mr.' Steeves and seconded by several the Board
voted that we submit the sum of $676.00 in the budget to take care of
the salary for another clerk at $13.00 per week.
Department bills were approved for payment. 1

Commissioner Henry F. Long's authority to the Assessors to abate
the balance due on Thomas G. Whiting's 1938 real estate tax bill was
received so the Board at this meeting signed the, abatement slips. The
abatement of $124.10 was granted under. Clause 18, Sec. 5. Chap. 59.
The 1939 Omitted Poll Tax Warrant to the Tax Collector for the sum
of $12.00 was signed by the Board.
Form 33 "The Report of Omitted Assessments" for Commissioner Long
was signed by the Board and mailed on December 18, 1939.•
The 1939 Omitted Real Estate and Personal Property Warrant to the
Tax Collector was signed by the Board:
Real Estate amount being for $693.49
Personal amount being for 2.31
$695.80 Total amount committed. 1
The Board signed the two warrants to be pasted with the omitted
real estate and personal items in the valuation book.

Mr. Spencer informed the Board that he attended the conference of 1
the Middlesex County Board of Assessors at Stoneham on December 14th 1
and that Commissioner Long spoke at length on Assessors going after more
personal valuation. Mr. Spencer read a letter that he had drawn up ands
asked if the Board were in favor of submitting it to the Selectmen as
the extra money needed to do this additional work would have to be ap-: I
proved and transferred from other funds to this department.
The Assessors were in favor of sending the state approved "Form of ,*
List" to about 3000 persons who should file during January and the Boar
voted that the letter be typewritten and signed by Chairman Steeves, so ;
that the Board of Selectmen could consider the matter at their Dec. 18t1
meeting.

The Board was informed that the Selectmen had been requested by
letter from Mr. Spencer to kindly transfer the sum of $7.00 to the
Assessors ' 1939 Appropriation Account. The sum of $6.00 more was spent'
for . Assistant Assessors salaries than was approved at Town Meeting,

and $1.00 more was spent over the amount approved for. other Clerical' ;-.

Letter from Mrs. Rachel Cohen asking for widows exemption for
' Mrs. Anna Goloboy of 39 Sylvia Street was read and the Board requested
that the statutory exemption form (Clause 17) be sent to her to fill
out and return so the Assessors could consider her case.
Letter from Mrs. Concetta Cataldo of 47 Rindge Avenue was received
and the Board requested that the statutory exemption, "Veteran Form"
be sent to her to fill out.
Letter from Ernest E. Alger of 1 Payson Street was read and the
Board requested that the letter be acknowledged and he be informed
that the Assessors will view his property before placing the 1940
assessment. fl
Letter dated Nov. 27th from George V. More, Acting Temporary Agent-
Bureau of Old Age Assistance, was read. Re : Bertram C. & Mary E. Buttton':
unpaid 1937,1938 and 1939 real estate taxes. There is a tax title on
their property.
The Board talked the matter over and voted to help the couple out.
It was suggested that Commissioner Long's authority be obtained so
that the Board could abate the 1937 tax.
Letter from the Lexington Co-operative Bank in regard to the refusal
of the Board to reduce the 1939 assessment on their property located
°' at '#24 Parker Street was read.
The Board suggested that they view the inside of the property.
Letter from Mabelle D. Beers of 358 Marrett Road asking for re-
valuation on her property for 1940 was read, and placed on file..
Letter dated Nov. 29th from Commissioner Henry F. Long Re: Abate- 5 .
Ment of charges and interest duo on Mrs. Eileen U. Cronin's back taxes
was read.
Copy of letter was given to Tax Collector Scam.man on Dec. 4th, so
that he could disclaim the tax title.
Letter dated Dec. 15th, from the Clerk of the Selectmen informing
the Board that the Appropriation Committee had voted on Doc. 11th to
transfer the sum of 4100 from the Reserve Fund to the Assessors '
Expense Account was read and placed on file.
