IV. Website discussion: Anwell Tsai (20 minutes)
There was a discussion about the transfer of the website to the new
one. We agree that the new website should have the double mission of
informing people about what happens in Lexington as well as spotlight
and follow the work of our grantees. The following suggestions were
made:
- We are thinking about creating a calendar of events and spotlight
the different organizations for everybody to see what is going on
in Lexington.
- Anwell is offering to teach a group of council volunteers how to
update the website.
- We will be adding our grantees on the calendar and also create a
page for each of them. One member of the council will be in
charge of acting as a liaison. Pictures will be taken when the
grantees' work will be finished and added to the grantee page on
the website.
V. Council and project updates
• Utility boxes: 3 in the Historical District. These have been
approved. There were many strong contenders for artists, a very
diverse group.
• Haiku : solicit haiku poems from the community along with some
illustrations. There will be workshops run by poets and by
professional sign painters. There will be an opening ceremony.
We are partnering with the Library which will be hosting
workshops, and we are also partnering with the Historical Sty.
• There will be lots of work to do ( ceremony, door to door to
ask stores to participate...) we have a project manager.
• The celebration will take place in July. (Mid July. week
days- Late afternoon/evening)
• The haiku project will be over by July 4th.
• This project will help the shops.
• Lisa points out that many people will be scattering during
the summer.
• Discovery day is in May ( Saturday the 5th). We will have a booth
and will need volunteers.
VI. Lex250 introduction and discussion: Jillian Tung
The year 2025 will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Battle
of Lexington and other events related to the founding of our country.
The Lexington Semiquincentennial Commission was formed as a
town committee to plan events related to the anniversary. Events are
being planned to span the whole year of the anniversary, beginning
from late summer/early fall of 2024. There will be many volunteer
opportunities and Jillian hopes the Council for the Arts will partner
with the commission on public art and music projects with themes
related to the Semiquincentennial.
VII. Publicity update, newsletter discussion
- Steve : A newsletter could talk about the grants, Haiku, utility boxes,
door auction, and that letter could be posted on the website and sent to
about the 200 people on our list.
We will also need to do a lot of publicity for the haiku project and hope
that Jessie will write an article on the CAAL letter or Ashley on other
magazines to get the word out.
Shalini (Annual Arts Festival) will be taking place in September behind
the depot.
During our last meetings, the idea of a signature event had been
introduced. Lisa is suggesting a laugh comedy in January:
- This is an opportunity to bring some life to Lexington during
these dull months.
- This could take place on a weekend with 2 or 3 performers and
be followed by open mics.
VIII/ LexSeeHer follow up discussion
Leslie Masson joined our meeting as a representative from LexSeeHer
with a request for an expression of support from the Council for the
monument project and their proposed siting of the monument.
The goal of the project is to make women visible in a prominent place in
Lexington ( Meredith Bergmann is a sculptor: it is a bas relief 16 68
until 2000. 20 women are represented). The proposed monument
would be next to the visitor's center.
- Many sites were explored but this one was considered the best.
- Other spots : Depot square, Library... ... .....
- The door would be looking at the Minuteman.
- One of the characters is Margaret Tulip .
- There are no photographs of the women.
Two motions were presented for action by the Council:
1. With regard to the proposal "The Lexington Council for the Arts
supports, in general, the monument proposed by Lex See Her",
the motion passed with a vote count of 6 out of 6 in favor.
2. With regard to the proposal "The Lexington Council for the Arts
supports the proposed siting of the monument on the Visitors
Center Green", the motion failed to pass. The vote count was 2
in favor, 1 against, and 3 abstaining.
