The true sign of springThe true sign of spring
The American woodcock, or
Timberdoodle, is a ground dwelling
bird that lives in young forests and
shrublands.
If you find yourself near a wet
meadow just before dark, listen for the
nasal PEENTPEENT of the American
woodcock.
This well-camouflaged, chunky, and
secretive member of the sandpiper
family does his best to attract a mate
in an impressive courtship dance. He
starts by bobbing in a circle on the
ground while calling, then he spirals up
high, and while circling above the
field makes a twittering sound with
special feathers. Next, he flutters back
to his original spot on the ground while
making little chirps, and starts all over
again. If he's lucky, a female is nearby
and enamored by his display.
Lepidoptera re-brandingLepidoptera re-branding
A group of entomologists and forestry
professionals convened by the
Entomological Society of America has
recommended "spongy moth" as the
new common name for the moth
species Lymantria dispar. It would
replace "gypsy moth" which is a
derogatory term for the Romani
people. Read more here.Read more here.
