Public works, and Col. Henry B. Barry, Vere admitted to this
meeting. At the time of their admittance to this meeting
the Committee was looking over the Highway Department - Road
Machinery - Cani tat outlay Budget, so Chairman Hoyt asked
Yr. Devoe to speak on this particular Budget.
Yr. DeFoe stated that the Government at the present
time is selling new power shovels for -;31500.001 and what he
would like to dois to see lust what could be p'archased in
the way of new equipment from the Government, as this would
be a considerable saving to the Town. Chairman Hoyt asked
7r. DeFoe if the trucks requested in this Budget, and the
Present equipment would be able to take care of snow storms
without hiring outside trucks. Mr. DeFoe stated that he
didn' t believe this was possible as the Colonel had explained
previously. ' It requires t' enty-four trucks to take care of
a snor storm, and these trucks are divided into twelve
districts.
The next Budget that Chairman Hoyt asked Mr. DeFoe
to exnlai.n was water Construction - Sundry Streets - Elimination
of DDead. Ends - at a cost of X86,637.50. Mr. Hoyt asked
whether it was the Intention of 1-r. DeFoe to have the Town
do this work, or would it be put )ut for contract. Mr. DeFoe
stated that he felt that the Town should do this work, as it
would be possible for them to do one Dead End at a time, and
he personally thought that war the way to handle it. Mr. DeFoe
and Colonel Barry had nothing further to say before this
Committee, so they left at 9:55 P.M.
At 10:00 P.v. ; the Committee on Tennis Courts con-
sisting of Rev. Handley, George Morse , Frank Perkins, and
three others, entered this meeting.
George Morse acted as Chairman and stated that this
Committee was interested in having clay tennis courts in
Lex' n-ton. The nreaent courts are asnhalt, and not Proper
courts for good tennis. Mr. Horse stated that he had spoken
to Tir. Garrity and Mr. Garrity was the one who suggested the
Committee get busy and submit a report. This Comm-ttee had
been before the Selectmen this evening, and they sug'ested they
come to see the Appropriation Committee. It was stated that
the Selectmen were in favor of doing; this work.' Mr. Morse
said that the cost to do two courts would be ' 31000.00.
Mr. Hoyt said that this Committee could not act on their
request as it vas up tO the Selectmen to consider a special
article in the warrant, or for Mr. Garrity, Superintendent
of Parks, to include the amount in his Budget. This Committee
stated that Mr. Garrity was out of town, and they °'ere more
or less on the "spot". It was brou'ht out to this Coy-'mi-ttee
that the Town Tarrant closed at 5 :00 P.M. toni ;ht, and
therefore, a separate article was not possible for this Town
Meeting. Chairman Hoyt suggested t'ie' r only course was to
see if Mr. Garrity was in favor of it, and would include an
item in his budget as he still had time change his
requested appropr' ati.on. Hoyt, as a s?uggeston, stated
that he thought this Comm- ttee ou'ht to look into things
further' and have them ready to present at the next Town
Meeting, as he felt that they were rather late in starting.
