The meeting was opened in the office of the Tonin
Ace nintant at 8:00 P.M. , by Chairman Lewis L. Hoyt, with
the tailoring members in attendance :

Minutes of the Meeting Held February 5, 1945.
It was regularly moved and voted to dispense
withthe reading of the m1- flutes of the regular meeting
held February 5, 1045.
Mr. Ronald Brown spoke about the School Depart-
ment Pers-nal Services, and asked Mr. Grindle what the
salary schedule would cost us this year over last year.
Mr. Grindle asked Mr. Brown about the Kindergarten. Mr.
Brown stated that the majority of the Appropriation
Committee were in favor of a ki_nlergrten, but not this
year.
At 8:15 P.M. , the School Committee consisting
of Tracy Ames, Webster Thomas and Thomas S. Grindle ,
Superintendent of Schools, were admitted to this meeting.
Chairman Hoyt asked "to that extent the present Budget is
the nor alnry schedule involved". Mr. Grindle stated
that the Elementary and Juni. -r High School teachers were
given slightly more than 15%. The Senior High teachers
are given exactly 15%. The amount over the 15% to the
Junior Hi 7h. School teachers was $15.00, and the Elementary
Schools $30.00. The increases this year using the new

salary schedule will only cost the TornV5.00. Tinder the
new salary schedule the teachers now at maximum of 1,900.00
eo to ft2, 100 .00. Mr. Cri ndle stated that using the eew '
salary schedule, the cost this year w' 11 be .1?150.00 more;
next year 4425.00 more; the third year X800.00 more - but
the total amount rill not be greater than 4,950.00. The
annual increases to tea -hers are approximately fi ;ured
en' forty teachers at 1100.00 each, making a total of
4,000.00. The additional amount required for two new
teachers which was approved by the Appropriation Committee
is t1, 800.00. Mr. Ames stated that once we were able to
hire teachers at 11,000.00, but now we. have to pay 1,300.00.
"ir. ari ndle stated that 60% of the teachers are
noe at maximum, and 38 teachers are under the maximum.
"sir. Ames said that the latest kindergarten
i nforme ti on is that the School Committee is putting a
separate article in the warrant. Mir. Ames was asked about
the total transportu.ti en cost for pj nils of the kinder-
garten. He said 44,600.00. Mr. Hoyt asked if it was going
to cost around 1,000.00 for ten months to operate the
indergarten which would be t10,000. 00 a year. Mr. Ames
said that he thoeeht that was nearly correct n a se,

that eas made, 136 children are ready to start in the
ki nderearten with three teachers to take care of them.
The School Committee left the meeting at 9:30 P.".
Chairman P-oyt spoke about the salary situation
and wanted to know Tei?ether this Committee was going to go
alone; with. the Board or Selectmen relative to salary
increases which they had recommended. After a general
discussion, Thacher ETeneey made a motion to increase the
heads of Departments which includes the Police and Fire
T?epr. tment. A motion was made, seconded and voted to
i ncreese the salaries of the Superintendent of Public
works, Superintendent of Parks, Clerk of the Board of
Assessors, Fi re' Department, Police Department and the
Town Accountant, according to the recommendations made by
the Board of Selectmen.
A motion was made, seconded and voted that the
Library Personal Servi ce Budget be accepted i.n accordance
with the Library schedule. This means that this Budget is
changed slightly. The Secretary was asked to figure these
changes and report them to the Approori; tion Committee at
their next meeting .
