Notification of this meeting was furnished to all mem- bers of the Committee by letter. The meeting was opened in the office of the Torn Account- ant at 8:05 P. . , by Chairman Lewis L. Brown Raymond L. 1 h.ite Town Accountant MINUTES OF T. E MEETING HELD NOVEMBER. 15, 1943. It was regularly moved and voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes of the regular meeting held November 15, 1943. Chairman Levis L. Hoyt read a letter received from the Board of Selectmen requesting a transfer of ` 500.00 from the Reserve Fund to the Town Offices Cary Memorial Building - Expenses Ac- count to take care of the additional expense incurred by sprinkler repair and the fire in the coal bunker. The insurance companies have paid for the damns. done but such receipts have been credited to estimated receipts and not to this appropriation. A motion was made, seconded and voted to transfer the sum of :4;500.00 from the Reserve Fund to the Torn Offices and Carer Memorial Building; - Ex- penses Account. Mrs. Luther R. Putney and Yr. Tracy "'. Ames, members of the School Committee; together with Mr. Thomas S. Grindle, Super- intendent of Schools, entered at 8:07 P.M. to discuss the School Budgets. School Maintenance - Personal Services General Control Superintendent - The Superintendent' s salary is the same as last year. -2- ,\ 2 /43 Clerks - This year the request is for 420191.83 against "1,535.67 requested last year. The increase in amount is for an additional girl in the Superintendent' s office. Miss Small, former clerk, has left the employ of the School Department and in her place they have a new girl, starting at X21.00 Per week and the second new girl starting at ';19.00 per week. Teachers - High - This year the request is for ,„ 90,601.30 against ',90,003.66. There is the same number of teachers as last year, except that three or four of the men teachers have been re-- placedby women teachers. Teachers - Elementary - This year the request is for 69, 95°.44 whith includes the annual increases against last year' s request of ,65,682.00. r'r. Anes stated that they had to raise the low salaried teachers to the new minimum scale. Teachers - Special - This year's request is for )7,005.22 against u:5,478.50. One teacher nor listed under Special was not so listed before. Teachers - Substitutes - This year' s request is for x:1,500.00 against :;800.00. Five hundred dollars is for payment to teachers leaving within the year due to the fact that they receive their compensation over a twelve-month period instead of the Previous ten-month period. Mr. Ames requested a :' 250.00 increase` for men teachers now at their maximum. The maximum salary is :; 2,500.00 plus the 1250.00, making the new maximum x2,750.00. Yr. Ames also requested' a :400.00 increase for the women teachers now at the maximum of ,il, 800.00 and n>l, 900.00 per year. This ` would increase the new maximum to 11,900.00 and ,;)2,000.00 per year. The increases are to be effective ' as of January 1, 1944, and are so figured in the budgets submitted. There are twenty-one women teachers now' at their maximum rho would benefit by raising the maximum salaries. The increases affect mostly the teachers in the Elementary Schools. T.Mr. Fred C . Newhall asked Thr. Ames about T,Messrs. Abel and Cooper rho are both coaches. He ranted to know whether their sala- ries included compensation for coaching. Mr. Ames stated that 500.00 of the increase in the high School - Teachers salaries is for extra compensation for coaching. -3- Chairman 3-Chairman Lewis L. Hoyt asked the members of the School Committee if they considered that they were up against an emer- gency situation in regards to salaries and the School Committee replied that they thought they were. Janitors - The amount asked for- this year includes the increases granted to janitors last summer. Health - Nurse - Eighteen hundred dollars is requested this year or a ;3100.00 increase over last year. School Maintenance - Expenses Supplies - High School - Three thousand three hundred twenty-five dollars is requested this year against €3,725.00 ap- propriated last year. Fuel - It isn' t possible to buy fuel nor if one has a thirty-days' supply on hand. This is the U.S. Government res- triction. Repairs - Five thousand dollars is requested this year against ' 4,500.00 appropriated last year. Transportation - Seven thousand seven hundred eighty- five dollars is requested this year against ` 7,261.00 appropriated last year. The Middlesex Pr Boston Street Railway Co. busses are used which have proved very satisfactory. ?r. Thomas S. Grindle asked if this Committee were going to talk to them again before the salary situation is settled. Mr. Hoyt, Chairman, stated that they would. The School Committee left the meeting at 9:30 P.M. rr. A. Edward Rowse, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, entered this meeting at 9:45 P.M. , concerning the request from the Assessors and Registrars Departments for additional money so that the Polls may be listed in December 1943, while the weather is good. The request from each Department is X200.00. Hr. Rowe then spoke about the Torn Reports. The Board of Selectmen had approved a report similar to the Town of Green- field. Hr. Carl Veano appeared before the Selectmen in reference to the Town Reports andstated that the Spaulding Moss Company only printedthem for the Town of Greenfield. Mr. Rowse said that -4- the report would cost X750.00 for 1,500 copies. "Tr. Veano wants >200.00 for the work he rill have to do on the reports. The Board of Selectmen decided to use Yr. Veano's services to put the report together; this was originally done by the Planning Board of the Town of Greenfield. The photography is going to take time. Mr. Rowse stated that they were going to order 2,500 books which would cost 0£350.00, plus • 200.00 for Mr. Carl Veano, plus 10150.00 for photography or a total cost of (1,200.00. After Tdr. Rowse left this meeting, the matter of trans- ferring X200.00 from the Reserve Fund to the Assessors ' Department - Personal Services Account and 1200.00 from the Reserve Fund to the Registrations Department - Personal Services Account was considered. A motion was made, seconded and voted that : 200.00 be transferred from the Reserve Fund to the Assessors ' Department - Personal Serv- ices Account and another $200.00 be transferred from the Reserve Fund to the Registrations Department - Personal Services Account.
